The Elon University women’s tennis team couldn’t get enough wins in the singles, falling to Florida Gulf Coast University 4-3 Friday afternoon.

“We’re making some strides,"  said head coach Elizabeth Anderson. "We’ve played a really tough schedule, so that makes it a little more challenging, but I think it will pay off for us in the long run."

Elon dropped the doubles point, but freshman Suzanne Zenoni got the Phoenix on the board with her win over sophomore Julianna Curtis in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.

The Eagles answered with wins at No. 6, 3, and 1 singles by seniors Alexandra Landert and Elizabeth Means and junior Breana Stampfli.

Senior Taylor Casey responded for Elon, earning a hard fought win in a third set tiebreaker over freshman Laura Falceto Font 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5).

Sophomore Erica Braschi made sure the Phoenix ended the day on a positive note. After dropping the first set 5-7, Braschi fought back to win the next two 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.

“I had to regroup a lot because that first set I didn’t have the best attitude and she outcompeted me so I had to trust in my game and not try and do anything spectacular. Just stay in there and fight,” said Braschi.

Casey and Braschi also earned the Phoenix their lone doubles win over Landert and Means 6-2.

With the loss, Elon drops to 1-6 on the season. The Phoenix looks to pick up its second win of the season at 3 p.m. Saturday at North Carolina State University.
