North Carolina must strengthen inadequate mandatory reporting law

The Freeh investigation into Penn State’s sexual abuse scandal shed cold light on the dark circumstances surrounding Jerry Sandusky’s rape and assault of 10 young boys over a 15-year period, an unthinkable series of crimes that also besmirched the legend of the late Joe Paterno and the football program that rose and fell as he did. Perhaps the most chilling information released in the report suggests Paterno wasn’t the only person to turn a blind eye as Sandusky assumed his degenerate alter ego.

GOP candidates belittle women through volatile sexual comments

Four years ago, I don’t know that anyone could have predicted that women’s reproductive health would be one of the most hotly-debated topics heading into the pinnacle of the presidential election season. The economy, sure, but a reignited social divide on issues of rape and abortion? But that’s where we are, forced to confront the ugly reality that many people in America, including many women, don’t see women’s bodies as their own. This particular point has been shoved to the forefront of people’s minds in the last few weeks as numerous political candidates in the Republican Party made comments about women that were both insensitive and simply ignorant. Women's volleyball moves forward following tough loss to Alabama

This past weekend, the Elon University women’s volleyball team hosted the Elon Phoenix Classic tournament, which included Gardner-Webb University, North Carolina Central University and the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. Elon started off strong in the tournament, winning its first two matches in three games against Gardner-Webb and NC Central. But in the final match of the tournament, the Phoenix faced the powerhouse the Alabama Crimson Tide. With the advantage of being able to watch Alabama play, head coach Mary Tendler said the team knew what Alabama was going to do.

North Carolinians rate public schools poorly in new Elon Poll

As K-12 students across North Carolina prepare for their winter break, the Elon University Poll released poll data on Dec. 17 finding that most North Carolinians gave mediocre or poor grades to public schools across the state. “The states have always had deep authority on education, but there has been more federal involvement in various years,” Director of the Elon University Poll Jason Husser said. “So we thought, well, this is the time for us to really look in depth about what do people think about North Carolina schools.”

Grief, loss support group provides comfort for Elon faculty, staff

Elon University associate chaplain Rev. Julie Tonnesen said loss and grief are universal emotions, but found that they can be difficult for faculty and staff to process while continuing their usual routines. “Even when we show up to work, that doesn’t mean that we get to put the rest of our lives on the back burner,” Tonnesen said. “Our grief comes with us. It’s not something we can just keep on a shelf at home.” In collaboration with Counseling Services, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, began offering a monthly group for faculty and staff to support those affected by loss.
