Kappa Phi Lambda of Elon University hosts information session teaching history of henna

Elon University’s Asian-interest sorority, Kappa Phi Lambda, hosted an information session about the South Asian practice of henna art to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Month. The session included a presentation on the history behind the cultural use of henna, followed by henna art for all to participate. Academic chair of Kappa Phi Lambda, junior Lindsey Mathew, led the session with a brief presentation on the background of henna, including different names and various styles depending on the region.

Next cohort of Elon University Multifaith Scholars selected for 2023-25

The Multifaith Scholars consists of Elon University juniors and seniors who will participate in a mentored undergraduate research program related to interreligious studies. Scholars design their own research project to devote time to, and undertake a major or minor in religious or interreligious studies. Scholars will receive a $5,000 grant annually to support their research and academic development.

Elon University Department of Performing Arts debuts Deep Water Ballad

On the April 28, the department of performing arts will debut a workshop of “Deep Water Ballad,” an original musical that has been over a decade in the making. “Deep Water Ballad” is set in the fictional coal mining town of Deep Water, West Virginia. When a devastating mining disaster happens the area spirals into the paranormal and the residents struggle to rebuild. The story follows a girl who tries to reconnect with her broken family in both the spirit world and natural world.

Meet Elon University's 2023 Lumen Scholars

Every year, 15 rising juniors win $20,000 for research through the Lumen Prize. Established in 2007 by former Elon president Leo Lambert, the goal of the Lumen Prize is to give students an opportunity to pursue research and support other experiences such as international travel, service projects and workshops. For the next two years, the Lumen Scholars will work closely with their mentors to complete their research.

North Carolina House proposed bill to ban nearly all abortions

The Human Life Protection Act of 2023, proposed in the North Carolina House, would ban nearly all abortions, except when a mother’s life is in danger. Republican Rep. Keith Kidwell was joined by Reps. Ben Moss and Ed Goodwin in filing House Bill 533 last month, which prohibits abortion except in cases that would result in a mother’s death or “impairment of a major bodily function.”

Elon University baseball storms back to defeat No. 9 Campbell

For the second time this season, the Elon University baseball team completed a comeback victory over a top-10 opponent at Latham Park. Redshirt junior second baseman Tanner Holliman's late-game heroics fueled the Phoenix to a 6-5 victory over the No. 9 Campbell University Fighting Camels. The win marked the first time since 2015 in which the Phoenix defeated two ranked opponents in one season. It previously did so defeating No. 22 UNC Wilmington in the 2015 season.

Former Vice President Mike Pence visits University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

Former Vice President Mike Pence spoke Wednesday at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill as protests occurred outside the student union before the event. The event was titled, “Saving America From the Woke Left” and was organized by the Young America’s Foundation. The former vice president touted his Christian faith throughout the speech and his support for bans on abortion. Last month, North Carolina House bill 533, known as the Human Life Protection Act of 2023 was introduced by the North Carolina General Assembly which would restrict abortions except when the life of the mother is in danger.

Elon University hosts Ukrainian novelist who writes about Russian censorship

In 2014, journalist and novelist Yuriy Lukanov was reporting from Kramatorsk, Ukraine. He remembers trying to open a bottle of red wine with friends that they bought from the only store open in the deserted city. They couldn’t find a corkscrew and ended up using a cleaning rod to push the cork into the bottle and enjoy the wine. To him, this was more than an inconvenience. It is a metaphor for how disruptive war can be. Lukanov told this story during a presentation he gave hosted by the Love School of Business and Vitaliy Strohush, Elon professor of economics. Lukanov emphasized the dangers of a censored press in Russia and the role novels can play in honest and creative storytelling.

Ukrainian journalist, novelist visits Elon University

Ukrainian journalist and novelist Yuriy Lukanov is on campus today and will speak to the Elon University community about his new novel “Reporter Volkovsky.” Vitaliy Strohush, a professor of economics at Elon, is friends with Lukanov and invited him to campus as the last stop on his book tour around the continental U.S.

Elon University earns voter friendly campus distinction

For the second year in a row, Elon was designated a voter friendly campus in a project started in partnership with Fair Election’s Center’s Campus Vote Project and Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education. Elon was one of 14 North Carolina schools given this designation and one of 258 schools nationwide.Elon Votes announced this designation April 16 and Co-lead Voting Ambassador Ruby Radis said this designation was earned in part due to the work her organization put into making voting easier for students.

Elon University senior staff members' leaving shakes up university

Elon University said goodbye to four senior staff members in the last year, all of whom have become presidents at other universities. The most recent to announce their departure is Jeff Stein, vice president of strategic initiatives, who will be leaving after serving Elon University for 21 years. Stein will become the president of Mary Baldwin University beginning in July, after announcing his departure April 14. Senior staff members leaving and beginning other roles isn’t new to the university. This trend started when former Dean of the School of Health Sciences Rebecca Neiduski announced her departure March 21, 2022, after starting her role at Elon five years earlier to become president of Wartburg College.Former Dean of the School of Communications Rochelle Ford, who worked at Elon since 2018, followed May 24, 2022, and announced she was becoming president of Dillard University. Former Provost Aswani Volety announced his departure May 26, 2022, to become the chancellor of the University of North Carolina, Wilmington.

Town of Elon’s fire district tax rate changed at council meeting

During the April 24 Elon Town Council meeting, the council voted to change the tax rate for the fire district. Discussions continued from the previous meeting on the funding for the fire department, specifically in regard to implementing a revenue-neutral tax rate. The council discussed the fire department needing more resources and firefighters.

Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson announces 2024 gubernatorial bid

Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson announced his bid in the 2024 race for North Carolina governor April 22 in Alamance County. Robinson is the first Black lieutenant governor in North Carolina, serving since 2021, and hopes to be North Carolina’s first Black governor. He is the second Republican to declare his gubernatorial bid in North Carolina, behind State Treasurer Dale Fowell. Robinson brought up issues of the economy and supporting working class families and protecting teachers. Robinson said he is running to represent average North Carolinians as he understands the struggles working class families face.

Elon University women’s tennis loses heartbreaker to William & Mary in CAA tournament semifinal

For the fifth consecutive postseason, William & Mary ended the Elon University women’s tennis team’s hopes at a Colonial Athletic Association title. The Phoenix fell 4-3 in heartbreaking fashion to the Tribe on Saturday morning in the CAA championship semifinals.

Elon University student starts Pancakes for Parkinson’s chapter on campus

A love for ’80s movies and a passion for a cause turned into a new endeavor for sophomore Ari Turobiner. One of his favorite movies is “Back to the Future,” and Turobiner had an idea based on one of the actors in the movie: Michael J. Fox. Turobiner started a chapter on campus of Pancakes for Parkinson’s, an event that benefits the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Disease Research. Turobiner lost his great aunt to the disease and wears a bracelet each day in her honor.

Town of Elon’s social district block party builds community through music, inflatables and lawn games. Though the social district has been soft launched for a month, the event marks the town's official kick off, which allows individuals of drinking age to carry beer or wine within a specified zone.
