Faculty, staff use week before classes to prepare for semester

Just days before students arrive back on campus each year and prepare for the upcoming semester, faculty members gather to make preparations of their own. For more than 15 years, planning week has served as a time for faculty and staff to gather and discuss strategies and new programs for the upcoming semester. “This year, we have several new programs that will begin to reinforce some of the goals in The Elon Commitment,” said Mary Wise, associate vice president of Academic Affairs.

New Student Orientation welcomes freshmen to Elon community

As a new class of students begins life at Elon University, the orientation team is working to ensure each of them feels welcome on campus. “The overall goal of orientation is to aid the transition for new students into the Elon community,” said Jill Padfield, orientation head team captain. To accomplish this goal, the orientation team has designed a series of activities to take place during move-in weekend to help incoming freshmen become more comfortable with Elon’s campus, the faculty and one another, according to Padfield. In addition to acclimating new students to Elon University, orientation also serves as an important social experience for incoming freshmen, according to senior Kathryn Knaus, student coordinator for orientation. “If you participate fully in orientation, I would be very surprised to hear that you don’t feel like you have a group of friends afterwards,” Knaus said.

'Let the Class of 2016 begin its journey'

New Student Convocation signals the beginning of another year as the members of the Class of 2016, transfer students and their families gather Under the Oaks at Elon University for the annual welcome ceremony. "This ceremony is one of the most meaningful occasions of the academic year," said President Leo Lambert." Lambert, along with Jan Fuller, university chaplain, Darien Flowers, Student Government Association executive president, Smith Jackson, vice president for student life and dean of students, Steven House, provost and vice president for academic affairs, and faculty members, greeted the most recent addition to the Elon community. The speakers challenged the more than 1,400 students to embrace the opportunities open to them and to seek adventure during the next four years. "If you take advantage of a number of opportunities Elon has to offer, you will lay the foundation for your future," Flowers said. The SGA President recounted walking tours through London that expanded his imagination and fed his curiosity, offering his own experiences as feasible goals.

Move-In Day generates enthusiasm throughout campus

Establishing life at college involves braiding together pieces of home with indications of a new beginning. Most Elon University freshman considered deciding what to pack to be their biggest challenge on Move-In Day, but Takeva Mitchell had no doubt her fish would accompany her to campus. "I had to bring him because my mom was not going to take care of him," said Mitchell, who transported her fish, Carter, in a plastic container from her house in Burlington. Freshman Jessica Grembowski also introduced reminders of home into the Elon community.

Women's cross country voted top in SoCon by coaches

Nine days before their first race of the season, the Elon University women's cross country team got a bit of a boost from the Southern Conference coaches. The Phoenix women were picked to finish first in the conference in 2012, earning the first-place vote of seven of the twelve SoCon coaches and 115 points.

Campus dining facilities renovated to increase capacity

In an effort to compensate for the loss of Harden Dining Hall, several changes have been made to dining facilities across campus, including name changes and seating expansions. The grab-and-go section of downstairs McEwen had been renamed McGo and redesigned to serve dining hall food to students on the run.

Elon University enrollment drops below 6,000 for first time since 2018

Elon University’s undergraduate enrollment has dipped below 6,000 students for the first time since spring 2018, according to the Spring Registrar’s Report released Feb. 23. This decrease comes after an 11.6% drop in enrollment for the class of 2029. Part of this pattern can be attributed to the “demographic cliff,” the decreasing supply of college students from a falling national birth rate that began in 2007. The total undergraduate enrollment of 5,974 is a decrease from the 6,226 students the university reported in the spring of 2025. It’s also roughly 200 fewer students than the 6,191 reported in fall 2025. Though overall student numbers dropped, there was also an increase of 523 seniors, compared to the fall report.

Mebane City Council to expand offices, parking for staff

The Mebane City Council purchased a dentist's office and parking lot for $325,000 in a unanimous vote. The property is located across from the City Hall. North Carolina requires local governments to keep a minimum reserve — called a fund balance — equal to 8% of their annual general expenses.
