Elon volleyball splits final day of Kristen Dickmann Invitational

The Elon University volleyball team lost to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-19) at the Kristen Dickmann Invitational in Annapolis, Md Saturday afternoon, but beat host Navy a few hours later 3-0 (27-25, 25-21, 25-22) to finish the tournament on a high note. In the first match, the Seahawks broke out of a tie game in the first set and maintained their lead throughout the rest of the match.

Men's soccer opens season with draw against Northeastern

After going winless in the preseason against two top programs in the country in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of South Carolina, the Elon University men’s soccer team earned a 1-1 draw with Northeastern University in both teams’ first game of the Duke Classic in Durham Friday night. Northeastern wasted little time getting on the board in the 9th minute on junior Donovan Fayd’Herbe de Maudave’s long-distance strike.

Volleyball can't cool Flames in season opener

After a hot start, the Elon University volleyball team fell to the University of Illinois at Chicago 3-1 (26-28, 25-18, 25-20, 25-21) at the Kristen Dickmann Invitational in Annapolis, Md. The Phoenix were ahead on the scoreboard for most of the first set before needing a tiebreaker to take the 1-0 lead, but a strong second set from the Flames pulled the match back even. Momentum from the second set propelled UIC to the victory. Elon’s front line of sophomore Megan Gravley and junior Kris Harris recorded 20 total kills between the two while freshman Morgan Maner led the team with 12 digs in her first official match with the Phoenix. Sophomore Ana Nicksic and senior Cali Estes had 22 and 14 assists, respectively. Senior Mary Kate Imrie filled up the stat sheet for UIC, recording 42 assists, 3 kills and 7 digs. Senior Justine Garcia added 19 digs, and junior Sara Sternard had 15 kills and 2 aces. The Flames had 19 total service aces in the game, including seven in the third set. UIC quickly got their act together late in the first set when a 22-17 lead for Elon quickly became a 24-23 UIC lead.

Renegade Productions: Filling the void for theatrical experimentation

Renegade Productions, an up-and-coming organization at Elon University, is a student-managed platform that offers an outlet for undergraduates to produce, design and perform any variety of performance pieces. The organization began with provisional status from the Student Government Association in 2011, when Class of 2013 Elon alumnus and BFA Acting major Logan Sutton recognized the need for a means by which students could develop independently sourced theatrical material. “Before my time at Elon, Renegade Productions existed but only as a name that was haphazardly tagged onto non-departmental, student-led productions,” Sutton said.

Graham Man Arrested on Strangulation Charges

An Alamance County man is accused of punching, biting and choking a female Elon student in the Station at Mill Point, according to police reports. Elon Campus Police arrested Patrick Ian Rose, 33, of Graham, on August 20 at 2:05 a.m.

Mold On Campus

While some students were greeted by orientation leaders this weekend, others were greeted by an unwelcome guest in their homes. Mold was found in some areas on campus from the Danieley Center to Mill Point. Physical Plant was on call during new student move in to deal with any problems in student's rooms, including signs of mold. Director of Physical Plant, Robert Buchholz, said that North Carolina's recent wet weather might be the cause. "The humidity is very high and you can start mildew and some mold growth that's not hazardous," Buchholz said.

Global Village Construction Update

Although construction on the Global Village continues, buildings four and five are completed. These buildings are currently housing learning communities such as the International Learning-Living community and the Spanish Learning-Living community. Regular dormitories are also located in these building and will house mostly first year students.

Is Elon The Most Beautiful College Campus?

If you've been on Facebook lately, odds are you saw an article by thebestcolleges.org listing Elon as the most beautiful college campus. The list ranks Elon above Kenyon College, Sewanee: The University of the South and Pepperdine University. Elon has been at the top of the list since 2011. "Everyone was so excited Elon was the number one most beautiful campus," Associate Professor of Computing Sciences, Dr. Megan Squire said.
