When students received an email telling them to get off campus ahead of an incoming hurricane, it didn’t tell them exactly where to go. Some jetted back home, states away from the projected wind and rain. Some students, however, found that their escape routes took them even closer to the storm’s path.
Even though rain and winds have been weaker than originally projected, students found themselves cooped up in their dorms due to the limited campus hours and availability of campus resources.
With the city of Burlington facing the lighter effects of tropical storm Florence, the fire department is going eastward to help those affected more strongly by the storm.
National news networks aired dramatic scenes of wind and waves slamming North Carolina's coast on Friday. But further inland, Elon University was largely unaffected by Hurricane Florence.
While the City of Burlington has been preparing, Mayor Ian Baltutis, is oceans away. Burlington has two sister cities, one in Gwacheon South Korea and one in Soledad de Graciano Sánchez, Mexico. Baltutis is currently visiting in Burlington's sister city in South Korea.
Even with the winds and rain of Hurricane Florence beginning to reach the Town of Elon, local business owners are determined to remain open throughout the storm.
