Elon University baseball excels on Senior Day

Heading into its final home game of the season, the Elon University baseball team looked to complete a few milestones with a win. The Phoenix did just that, winning 9-6 against the North Carolina A&T Aggies, and in doing so it earned its 30th victory on the season, its final home victory and punched its ticket in the Colonial Athletic Association postseason.

Gov. Roy Cooper vetoes abortion bill at rally in Raleigh

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper vetoes Senate Bill 20 at a rally in Raleigh May 13. The bill would limit abortions from 20 weeks to 12 weeks. Cooper said opposed SB20 because he said it was reckless that both Republican-dominated houses of the General Assembly passed the bill within 48 hours. SB20 would also place further restrictions on reproductive rights if it were to become a law.

Always Dancing: A Photo Story

Charles Richardson grew up in Brooklyn, New York, with his parents and sister, but he moved to Burlington, North Carolina, in 2012 when he was 15 years old. Throughout his life he was diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, attention deficit disorder and delayed learning disability, but nothing ever felt right with his mom, Yvonne Whitley. It wasn't until he transferred to Southern High School in Graham, North Carolina, she said, that he was diagnosed with high-functioning autism.

Gov. Roy Cooper to veto abortion bill at Raleigh rally

Gov. Roy Cooper is scheduled to veto SB20, an abortion bill that would limit abortions from 20 weeks to 12 weeks, at a Raleigh rally May 13. The bill is titled "Care for Women, Children, and Families Act." This rally follows Cooper's "abortion roundtables" in Mecklenburg County on May 9 and New Haven County on May 10 to encourage legislators to uphold his veto.

Family of anatomical ‘silent teacher’ attends Elon University’s Human Donor Memorial

For the first time ever, family members of a human donor in Elon University’s Undergraduate Human Anatomy Laboratory attended the Human Donor Memorial held at the end of each semester. Guest speaker and Chaplain Emeritus Richard McBride also submitted his consent papers during the event, solidifying the donation of his body to Elon's Anatomical Gift Program after death. Students and faculty got to hear about the life of one of their donors from their family members at the memorial, as well as see and hear about why McBride decided to donate his body.

Guide to Elon University commencement, senior activities for class of 2023

A comprehensive and interactive calendar for Elon University's class of 2023 graduation and commencement events. The bulk of events occur from Tuesday, May 16 to Friday, May 19. Commencement guest parking will open at 7:30 a.m. and Schar Center parking will only be available for guests during the ceremony they are attending. Participating graduates must ensure that tickets are in the possession of the guests who will attend the diploma ceremony by May 19.

Southern Alamance Middle School teacher terminated, faces additional indecent liberties charges

The Alamance Burlington Board of Education voted to terminate the employment of Ivan Danilo Ardila-Perez, a Southern Middle School teacher, during its work session Tuesday. Perez, 37, had been a Spanish teacher and soccer coach. According to a press release, detectives with the Special Victims Unit served Perez four additional warrants on Monday. He is being charged on each warrant with one count of indecent liberties with a student and one count of felony indecent liberties with a child.

Burlington community celebrates return of Carousel Festival

The Burlington community celebrates  32nd annual event and return of Carousel Festival held May 6 to 7 at City Park. The 100-year-old landmark site sits inside a newly built carousel house. The last time the festival occurred was in 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and construction and renovations. The carousel is now open for the spring and summer on Friday, Saturday and Sundays and costs $1.50 a ride.

Friends, teammates honor Elon University junior with tattoos

Some of Elon University junior Jackson Yelle’s friends honor him through getting tattoos. Yelle died after what is being investigated as a hit-and-run in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on April 30. Yelle's club baseball teammate, Elon junior Garrett Fitschen, got the words "This is the Life" tattooed on the back of his shoulder, as it was something Yelle said while at the beach. Fitschen said the tattoo commemorates Yelle's "no regret" attitude toward living life.

Elon University senior continues dancing dreams at professional level

Elon University senior Lindsey Rothenstein continues her dancing dreams at the professional level as an NFL dancer for the Washington Commanders. Nicknamed the Command Force, Rothenstein auditioned for the team in April and underwent a four-day tryout process. The team will practice all summer to prepare for the NFL season, which takes place from May to January, with two to three practices a week in addition to game days and community appearances.

Elon University Trustee Emeritus Jack Lindley dies at 88

Elon University Trustee Emeritus Jack Lindley died May 5 at the age of 88. Lindley served 17 years as a trustee and five as trustee emeritus. He was a member of Elon’s Order of the Oak, Elon’s giving society. He and his wife, Dorothy, created the Jack R. and Dorothy C. Lindley Scholarship to support Alamance County students attending Elon.

Elon Community Garden hosts 14th Strawberry Festival

Elon University's Community Garden held its annual Strawberry Festival on Friday. The festival, which is now in its 14th year, celebrates the spring season and the fruit that comes with it. The festival took place in the Community Garden, located on East College Avenue, between Hillel and the Powell House. The garden is a student-run project that promotes sustainable agriculture and provides fresh produce to the local community.

Elon University celebrates class of 2023 Odyssey scholars

Elon University celebrates the accomplishments of 35 graduating Odyssey scholars for the class of 2023. Kellcee Batchelor ’18 gave the ceremony’s keynote address an Odyssey alum and asked students to always prioritize their values, impact and purpose — what he referred to as the VIP framework. University President Connie Book started the celebration acknowledging the newest cohort of Odyssey scholars, class of 2027, as the largest cohort yet with 57 participants.

‘We've forgotten about the conversation’: HIV/AIDS still hits the South as awareness fades

45 years after the first reported cases of HIV/AIDS in the U.S., the fight against this disease is far from over, especially in the South. According to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the South accounted for 52% of all HIV diagnoses in the U.S. in 2023. "We know that HIV/AIDS has had a disproportionate effect on people of color or queer people of color in this country," Professor of communication studies at Vanderbilt University Jeff Bennett said. "You have many people living in rural areas. You might have distrust of medical providers, you have the social stigma.”
