Black History Month celebrated through song and dance

Whitley Auditorium burst at the seams with excitement Feb. 7 while unveiling an anthology of African works of art performed by Elon University students to celebrate Black History Month. Directed by dance professor Jason Aryeh, the performance highlighted dance pieces learned by students who traveled to Ghana for the performing arts Winter Term program, in addition to pieces choreographed by junior dance majors Brenna Dames and Sophie McNeill. This performance has been a long-time goal of Aryeh’s. “This really was something I was thinking about since I moved to Elon, and I wanted to make it become a reality,” he said.

Confidence shines during Elon winning streak

With 9.8 seconds remaining in its Feb. 9 game against Georgia Southern University, the Elon University men’s basketball team trailed by two points. With one heroic heave, senior guard Jack Isenbarger turned what would have been a disappointing home loss to an 11-13 Georgia Southern team into pandemonium inside Alumni Gym.  Isenbarger’s shot dropped through the net, giving Elon a 60-59 lead with less than a second remaining and stretching its winning streak to four games, its longest of the season. Alumni Gym has long been a tough place to play for Elon opponents.  The buzzer-beating win improved Elon’s record to 5-0 at home in Southern Conference games this season.  Incredibly, it’s been over a year since the Phoenix last lost a home game in conference to a team other than Davidson College. Challenging the norm with early graduation

If you think about it, four years is a really long time. Four years is a presidency, four years is the time span between every Olympics, four years is the length of Kim Kardashian’s first marriage (and more than 20 times longer than her second, infamously brief marriage). And when you’re 21 or 22, the age of most graduating seniors, four years is little more than one-fifth of your lifetime.

SUB, SGA consider changes to annual concerts

Every year, there are two concerts at Elon. One is in the fall, and one is in the spring, but this tradition might change soon. The Student Union Board and Student Government Association say they are considering combining the two concerts into one Homecoming show. SGA Student Body President Welsford Bishopric said he thinks everyone would benefit from combining the shows.

Phoenix softball motivated to prove doubters wrong

The Elon University softball team was less than enthusiastic about where it was picked to finish in the Southern Conference’s preseason poll. The Phoenix, which struggled to a 21-31 record last season, was picked seventh out of the conference’s eight teams, something senior infielder Lauren Oldham insists will be in the back of every player’s mind. “We were told a couple days ago about [our ranking],” Oldham said.

Elon tennis, softball, basketball games postponed

UPDATED: 9:54 a.m., February 12. Due to the weather forecast, the Elon University athletic department has announced postponements of four events for Wednesday, February 12. The scheduled softball home opener against the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has been cancelled and will be made up at 5:30 p.m.

Valentine's Day activities abound in Greensboro, at Elon

Elon University physics major explores connection between quantum, classical physics in SURF project

Junior Muhammad Awal Tahiru’s project for this year’s Student Undergraduate Research Forum is focusing on how small-scale things move and how to bridge together quantum physics and classical physics. Classical physics deals with the predictable behavior of human-scale objects; whereas, quantum physics deals with probabilities of the smaller, atomic world of particles. These two types don’t always fit together, according to chair of the department of physics and astronomy Martin Kamela, who served as Tahiru’s research mentor.

Belk Library to add neuroinclusive spaces guided by student research

Over the summer of 2026, Elon’s Carole Grotnes Belk Library will create two new neuroinclusive spaces to better support diverse learning needs, building on the success of two classrooms in Lindner Hall that have been in use throughout the school year.These spaces are a result of research conducted by students: senior Kira Campagna, junior Benjamin Krasnow, and junior Kaz Kelly, who are studying what makes a classroom accessible and effective for all learners.
