Free tutoring returns to Haw River Elementary school for preschoolers

Starting at the end of the month, the Little Village Project, a subset of the It Takes a Village Project, will resume after a three year hiatus due to a lack of resources during the COVID pandemic in 2020. The program, founded in 2014, is designed specifically for pre-K students, in hopes of preparing them for kindergarten.

Elon University School of Law hosts Sunny Hostin for speaker series

Elon University School of Law welcomed co-host of “The View” Sunny Hostin on Feb. 9 as part of its Distinguished Leadership Lecture Series. Interim dean of the School of Law Alan Woodlief moderated the conversation, where the three-time Emmy Award-winning journalist spoke on her childhood, early career, social justice, the importance of media and her autobiography, “I Am These Truths.”

Elon becomes open to AI as campus police departments adopt higher-grade surveillance technology nationwide

Joe LeMire, Elon University’s chief of campus safety and police, first heard about the use of artificial intelligence software to track student social media activity at the annual North Carolina Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators Conference on Feb. 2. During a break in between conference sessions, LeMire spoke to other North Carolinian directors and chiefs of police about the practicality of using AI software as a viable campus safety measure. While LeMire said Elon does not currently use or have plans to implement AI software, the concept is on his mind as the practice becomes more common and effective nationwide.

Elon University communications focuses branding on storytelling

During Elon University’s Student Government Association’s town hall in the Moseley Student Center on Feb. 9, Mike Haskins, vice president of university communications, discussed Elon’s brand with students and how it impacts the school. Haskins said Elon’s brand is its story. Haskins said one of the reasons building a brand is crucial is because it helps build its reputation, making more students interested in attending the university. Haskins said Elon’s brand is important, as it increases students’ future career opportunities by increasing its name recognition.

Elon University football player joins battle against breast cancer

Jon Seaton currently has over 1.8 million followers on TikTok thanks to his name, image and likeness deal, which helps all kinds of collegiate athletes achieve influence and enhance their careers. Seaton partnered with Outback Steakhouse in October. Now, he and the restaurant chain are working to help in the fight against cancer with Fighting Pretty, a nonprofit organization created by Kara Frazier to empower women during and after cancer treatment.

Alamance County activists urge all Oct. 31, 2020 protest charges to be dropped

If it hadn’t been overcast Thursday, those words would have been in the Rev. Gregory Drumwright’s shadow as he urged the Alamance County district attorney to drop all outstanding charges against individuals arrested at the Oct. 31, 2020 “I Am Change” march to the polls. Just three days after he was found not guilty for “resisting a public officer” at the October 2020 protest, and six days after his “failure to disperse” charge was dismissed, 19 individuals stood in front of the memorial as Drumwright demanded justice for the vocal minority who put their lives at risk for change and equality.

History of Black travel presentation at Elon analyzes past, present movements

Charis Tucker said she will always remember every trip and vacation she’s ever been on. The creator and host of the study abroad podcast, STAMPED, considers herself a Black traveler and explorer. But when she learned that other Black and African American individuals weren’t exposed to the same experiences, she knew there was a part of history that needed to be addressed. “There's these gaping holes and things that we don't know about the early experiences of Black travelers from a leisure perspective,” Tucker said. “There's a lot that starts kind of right after the civil rights movement, but Black traveling was long before that and we don't really know a lot about that Jim Crow era.”

University Bursar to leave Elon after decades of service

Jay Harper first stepped on Elon University's campus as an undergraduate student in 1990. Little did he know, being a Phoenix would become a decades-long endeavor. Harper returned in 2002 and spent more than 20 years working as the university bursar. Harper will leave his role of working with tuition, students and parents to head to Duke University Medical Center’s Department of Pediatrics, where he will work in a primarily remote finance position with the Children’s Clinical Research Unit. Harper said while he will be performing similar tasks in his new position,  he’s excited to become a piece of an entirely new puzzle.

Town Council considers extending Link Transit access to Elon

At its Jan. 23 regular meeting, the Elon Town Council voted to continue looking into the option to extend the blue line of Burlington’s fare-free Link Transit bus system, adding six stops in the town of Elon. The Link Transport proposal would mark the first time in 62 years that Elon has been linked with train service using public transport since the Elon College station, served by the Southern Railway, closed in 1961.The Elon College depot once stood on the corner of Lebanon and Williamson Avenues.

Chef Kabui brings indigenous wisdom to Elon University

After his “chef takeover” with Elon Dining, Kabui headed to El Centro for a food justice dinner and discussion in partnership with the Center for Race, Ethnicity & Diversity Education and Elon Sustainability. The event, “A Black Food Odyssey in the American South,” was an in-depth cooking lesson infused with Kabui’s deep knowledge on sustainability, community and humanity. He discussed the deep roots between his community and food and how the principles of health and community wellbeing are deeply intertwined.

Grief, loss support group provides comfort for Elon faculty, staff

Elon University associate chaplain Rev. Julie Tonnesen said loss and grief are universal emotions, but found that they can be difficult for faculty and staff to process while continuing their usual routines. “Even when we show up to work, that doesn’t mean that we get to put the rest of our lives on the back burner,” Tonnesen said. “Our grief comes with us. It’s not something we can just keep on a shelf at home.” In collaboration with Counseling Services, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, began offering a monthly group for faculty and staff to support those affected by loss.

45 años después de los primeros casos de VIH/SIDA reportados en Estados Unidos, la lucha contra esta enfermedad está lejos de terminar, especialmente en el sur del país. Según los datos más recientes de los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades, el sur representó el 52% de todos los diagnósticos de VIH en Estados Unidos en 2023. "Sabemos que el VIH/SIDA ha afectado de manera desproporcionada a las personas de color y a las personas LGBTQ+ de color en este país", afirmó Jeff Bennett, profesor de estudios de comunicación en la Universidad de Vanderbilt. "Hay muchas personas que viven en zonas rurales, existe desconfianza hacia los profesionales de la salud y persiste el estigma social".
