A "hopping" good time at the Company Shops Market

It was a play on words: the Co-Op hosted the Co-Hops and more than 300 people showed up for the event, the fourth annual Beer Festival on Saturday in downtown Burlington. "It's a lot of work, but when it actually happens, it's worth it," Megan Sharpe, the customers service manager, said. The tragical misutilization of English

When my daughter was small and angry with me, she called me the Mean Mean Monkey Queen (Thank you, “The Wizard of Oz”), so I thought that if I ever had a grammar column or blog, I’d use the name Mean Mean Grammar Queen, since having taught grammar, linguistics and writing for four decades probably qualifies me for that title.

While the Elon University football team lost the lead late in the fourth quarter, they’ll be looking back at the first half for an abundance of missed scoring chances against North Carolina A&T State University. Elon started its first five drives from its own 47 yard line, NC A&T’s 45 and its own 46, 45 and 40 yard lines. While the Phoenix reached Aggie territory in four of those five drives, it came away with no points. “We had a couple missed opportunities in the first half,” said head coach Rich Skrosky. You could say that again.

The problem with expectation inflation

Lately, I’ve been thinking, “Maybe I’m mediocre.” And even more lately, I’ve been thinking, “So what?” Growing up in the age of participation trophies, I have been led to believe, like many others of my generation, that I am special — perhaps even destined — for great things.
