Cheating or a resource: Elon University faculty balance ChatGPT in classroom

The bot in question is an artificial intelligence chatbot called ChatGPT, released in November 2022 by San Francisco-based research laboratory OpenAI. It is not the first of its kind — Siri, Grammarly and customer service bots are all examples of chatbot technology. But ChatGPT distinguishes itself with its ability to answer advanced, creative questions and remember the thread of dialogue.

Elon University Truitt Center Sponsors annual, student-led Ripple Conference

Students from Elon University and visiting campuses left the three-day Ripple Conference after a weekend of interfaith discussion, speakers, and activities. The annual student-led Ripple Conference was sponsored by the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life and aimed to inspire interfaith students to create leaders within spiritual and religious work. This year was the conference's eighth year and the first fully in-person conference since 2020.

Ashton Newhall to be Elon University’s 2023 commencement speaker

Ashton Newhall '98 will deliver the keynote address for the class of 2023 at Elon University's undergraduate commencement ceremonies May 19. The 133rd Commencement Exercises will include two ceremonies for the Class of 2023 in Schar Center. The 9 a.m. diploma ceremony will be for the Dr. Jo Watts Williams School of Education and Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences. The 2:30 p.m. diploma ceremony will be for the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business and the School of Communications.

Elon University baseball loses opening weekend series against University of Kentucky 2-1 after 4-0 shutout

The Elon University baseball team was unable to break the tie in its weekend series against the University of Kentucky, as the Phoenix fell 4-0 to the Wildcats in the last game of the series on Sunday. After a 2-0 shutout win Feb. 17, the Phoenix couldn’t keep the momentum going through the weekend. The Wildcats turned the tables on the Phoenix and went on to win Feb. 18 5-1.

Elon University baseball’s offensive struggles leads to 5-1 defeat against the University of Kentucky

The Elon University baseball team left with unfinished business against Southeastern Conference opponent University of Kentucky in the second game of the three game weekend series Saturday, losing 5-1. After being shutout 2-0 by the Phoenix on Feb. 17, Kentucky wasted no time ending the drought, as sophomore left fielder Ryan Waldschmidt smashed a lead off double off the left field fence.

Elon University softball fends off St. Francis University in Phoenix Invitational

The Elon Softball Phoenix Invitational rolled on Saturday when the Elon University softball team faced off against St. Francis University on Saturday, Feb.18. Despite a late run by the Red Flash, the Phoenix held on by a final score of 4-3, and were able to pick up its second victory in the tournament. Head coach Kathy Bocock said she was happy the team could add another mark in the win column, but said there was still a lot of room for improvement.

Elon University wins in pitchers duel against University of Kentucky

The 2022 Colonial Athletic Association co-rookie of the year sophomore left-handed pitcher Shea Sprague stepped onto the mound of the Elon University baseball team’s Opening Day with immense confidence. Sprague would go on to pitch a strong 79 pitches over six innings, giving up zero runs and leading the team to a 2-0 win against the University of Kentucky.

New provost updates Elon University Student Government Association

During Elon University’s Student Government Association meeting on Feb. 16, Provost Rebecca Kohn said that her new role has allowed her to work more with diversity, education and inclusion, as well as health and wellbeing within the university.  Kohn said that she has been a part of work being done to advance the equity requirements that Elon students will be required to take, beginning in fall 2023. Kohn also said she helped with recruitment and retention of people of color on staff. Part of this work included looking at where there may have been existing bias and taking a closer look at how to recruit with diversity as a priority and use inclusive language.

Burlington’s Paramount Theater presents screening of “Racist Roots: The Film”

Burlington’s Paramount Theater held a screening of “Racist Roots: The Film,” a film about North Carolina’s racist history with the death penalty Feb. 16. The film portrayed a series of stories from people who were advocates of ending the death penalty, who have been exonerated and who are currently on North Carolina’s death row. The 25 minute film was made by the Center for Death Penalty Litigation, a non-profit law firm that represents people on death row in North Carolina.
