Stephen Hawking answered a question about Zayn Malik, and it was perfect

Have no fear, One Direction fans. An alternate universe where Zayn Malik hasn’t left One Direction and is still touring alongside his four mates may exist — at least according to Stephen Hawking. The legendary theoretical physicist, cosmologist and author spoke at the Sydney Opera House last Saturday to discuss topics like the future of our planet and his diagnosis with ALS. During the Q&A portion of the night, a clever audience member posed the question: “What do you think is the cosmological effect of Zayn leaving One Direction and consequently breaking the hearts of millions of teenage girls across the world?” And Hawking’s response was perfect. “Finally, a question about something important,” he said.

Update on student involved in N. Williamson Ave. car accident

Gabriela Rosales, the first-year student hit by a car on North Williamson Avenue in mid-March has just been transferred to WakeMed where she will begin her rehabilitation process. According to her CaringBridge site, Rosales was transported from the UNC hospital on Thursday, April 23 in order to begin therapy.

Burlington, N.C. businesses struggle to stay afloat

Fifteen minutes away from Elon's campus is a small shopping center off of North Church St. Cum Park Plaza is home to a number of businesses, but it also hosts a number of empty lots where stores and restaurants used to reside. Vaughan McCraw is the store manager of Schewel Furniture Company, one of the businesses in the plaza.

Elon’s vocal jazz ensemble group to perform Sting tribute concert

Elon University’s only vocal jazz ensemble group, elan, will be bringing a distictive style and sprit to the music of Sting, who wrote hits like “Roxanne” and “If You Love Someone Set Them Free,” in its spring concert “Bring on the Night” on April 28.  elan combines a cappella with jazz, but also performs other genres such as rock and pop.

President Lambert urges Elon community to take action against racial intolerance

University officials along with police and campus security are investigating an incident of racial intolerance that occurred Wednesday night on North O'Kelly Avenue. The incident involved an African American female student being shouted at from a passing car. In a press report released on Friday, April 24, students and members of the community were informed of this incident and asked to take action. President Leo Lambert urged Elon students and community members to take a stand regarding racial misbehavior. "Let me be as clear as possible: Our community will not tolerate acts of racism, which undermine and contradict our core values and cause fellow members of the community to feel unsafe and devalued as human beings," President Lambert wrote in his email. President Lambert is asking students and members of the community to take it upon themselves to make a change to their everyday lives and interactions. "Bias and bigotry are not unique to Elon-indeed racism seems to be part of an increasingly toxic environment in modern society" Lambert wrote. Members of the Black Student Union along with other student organizations are developing a plan aimed at attacking "the fundamental issues that are at the root of the racial incidents we have experienced." Police are asking for information that might help them in their investigation.

2015 Lumen Scholars Announced

Fifteen sophomores received news Thursday morning that they were recipients of Elon University's Lumen Prize, a $15,000 award given to help students attain their "ambitious and serious intellectual goals." Applicants were required to go through an extensive application process that included letters of recommendation and nomination, a detailed project plan and interview. Ann Cahill, director of the program, released the list of the recipients Friday afternoon in an email to The Pendulum.

Phoenix lacrosse finding a home in CAA

A late Friday afternoon women’s lacrosse game against a team from Long Island who brought fans to tailgate. That sounds quintessential for the league, one based with teams up through the mid-Atlantic where lacrosse is a popular sport.
