North Carolina's food insecurity problem

 

For Alamance County resident Stephanie Jones, Thanksgiving means more than just a meal. It means spending the extra $20 to feed her two children the Thanksgiving feast they dream of. It means making the traditional turkey and ham. And it means spending her food stamps on a one-meal splurge instead of spreading them out to cover several meals as she normally would.

North Carolina, like most of the United States, produces and imports more than enough food to feed its residents, at least in theory. But thousands go hungry each day, relying on a food-insecure system glued together with SNAP benefits, co-op startups and old-fashioned soup kitchens.

Seniors power Elon past Winthrop in 3-0 win

The Elon University men's soccer team racked up the goals in a big 3-0 win over Winthrop on Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA Soccer Championship. The win was an emphatic way to snap a streak in which the Phoenix had lost four of its last five games, and sets up Elon to play Clemson in the second round of the tournament on Sunday evening. After a back and forth contest for most of the first half, Elon senior James Brace opened the scoring by sliding into a Jaiden Fortune cross from the right wing and pushing the ball past the keeper. "When you can go into halftime in the lead, that always helps," Brace said.

Student brings news DMAX Club to Campus

DMAX is a new student organization that wants to offer resources to students who are dealing with mental health issues. Junior Ben Kleinman is starting an organization on campus in honor of one of his friends. "I had a good friend in high school his name was Dan Maxwell, and he passed away," Kleinman said.

Football attempts to move on to ‘new normalcy’

The Elon University football team returned to campus late Saturday night after defeating the University of Maine 27-22 earlier in the day. The conclusion to a week of unimaginable tragedy — the death of junior wide receiver Demitri Allison — had ended in triumph. But for head coach Rich Skrosky, recalling the week that was has left some words lingering in his mind. “One of the coaches — and so many coaches reached out — not to say anyone specific, but a name most people would know, his words were, ‘This week will be harder than last,’” Skrosky said, then paused, letting the words hang in the air. Author lectures on misogyny and extremism

The Elon community gathered in Numen Lumen’s McBride Gathering Space room to hear Cynthia Miller-Idris speak about the influence of misogyny on domestic violence and violent extremism. The lecture honored the memory of Lauren Dunne Astley, who was murdered by her boyfriend in July 2011, before she was able to begin her college journey at Elon University.

Criminal justice reform attorney visits Elon, tells story of hope, dignity

When attorney Brittany Barnett met Sharanda Jones, she saw positivity and light, far from what she expected from meeting a woman 10 years into her life sentence. Barnett was a young lawyer who felt a pull towards Jones, who was sentenced to life in prison on her first federal drug offense. Barnett, a criminal justice reform attorney, visited Elon University on Feb. 26 as part of the Liberal Arts Forum, a student-run organization that invites speakers on various topics to engage with the Elon community.
