Phoenix outlasts Peacocks in double overtime

The Elon University mens basketball team outlasted the Peacocks of Saint Peter’s University in double overtime on Saturday night in Alumni Gym. Despite the Phoenix's offense being held stagnant at multiple points during the game, Elon was able to secure the 71-65 victory.

Creating a home away from home

 Even before Thanksgiving break began, the residence halls at Elon University were decked with Christmas decorations. Previously, cobwebs, spiders and pumpkins were the main source of ornamentation, but as early as Nov. 1, these scary adornments were replaced by cheerful bows, stockings, snowflakes and garland.

Men’s basketball edges South Florida in overtime thriller

The Elon University men’s basketball team secured its third home victory of the season on Thursday night, defeating the University of South Florida in overtime thriller, 79-78. In a string of fate, this marks the third consecutive year in which the Phoenix has played (and won) a home overtime game on November 30th.

Phoenix golf squads study abroad in Scotland

The Elon University golf teams became the most recent Phoenix teams to study abroad, following Elon’s quest to create better global citizens in its students. According to Elonphoenix.com, the Elon athletics department “organizes and funds team global study courses, combining learning experiences with competition in countries around the world. Since 2011, Phoenix student-athletes have studied abroad in Europe, Asia and Central America.” Earlier this year, the football team traveled to Costa Rica while the tennis teams traveled to Hawaii.

Elon falls to Furman in first round of FCS playoffs

A blocked extra point was the deciding factor Saturday as the Elon University football team fell in the first round of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) to Furman University, 28-27. In a game that witnessed three lead changes and eight touchdowns, No. 15 Phoenix was upset by the No. 22 Paladins in Rhodes Stadium.

Switching skates for books: Elon sophomore's Olympic dreams derailed by health concerns

As she trained for the Olympics, Elon University sophomore Whitney Miller sustained a concussion that changed the track of her athletic dreams forever. The concussion that shattered her hopes of qualifying for the 2014 Winter Olympics came after she fell head first on the ice. She was dropped by her partner in a fluke accident during a run-through for their program, and she suffered a traumatic brain injury.

Community members take different stances on gun control following mass shootings

The United States experienced two of the worst mass shootings in modern history only 36 days apart; just over a month's time. But, while many are mourning, the issue of gun control has reared its ugly head — again. While these violent acts have contributed to speculations about guns, others believe guns are a form of protection in violent situations. Both sides of the spectrum are present at Elon University's campus and the Burlington community.

Elon football is playoffs bound

Following an 8-3 (6-2 in conference) season, the Elon University football team is playoffs bound.  The Phoenix will play host to the Furman University Paladins on Saturday, Nov. 25, the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) playoffs committee announced during the selection show on ESPNU this morning.

North Carolinians rate public schools poorly in new Elon Poll

As K-12 students across North Carolina prepare for their winter break, the Elon University Poll released poll data on Dec. 17 finding that most North Carolinians gave mediocre or poor grades to public schools across the state. “The states have always had deep authority on education, but there has been more federal involvement in various years,” Director of the Elon University Poll Jason Husser said. “So we thought, well, this is the time for us to really look in depth about what do people think about North Carolina schools.”

Grief, loss support group provides comfort for Elon faculty, staff

Elon University associate chaplain Rev. Julie Tonnesen said loss and grief are universal emotions, but found that they can be difficult for faculty and staff to process while continuing their usual routines. “Even when we show up to work, that doesn’t mean that we get to put the rest of our lives on the back burner,” Tonnesen said. “Our grief comes with us. It’s not something we can just keep on a shelf at home.” In collaboration with Counseling Services, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, began offering a monthly group for faculty and staff to support those affected by loss.
