Panelists voice support for Deferred Action Immigration Program

A panel of four educators and experts on immigration gathered at Elon University Oct. 17 to discuss the Deferred Action Immigration Program and how it affects the lives of Latinos in the community and in the country. The Deferred Action Program offers two-year work permits to illegal immigrants under 31 and allows them to apply for a social security number, a driver’s license and exemption from deportation during that time, according to Ken Fernandez, assistant professor of political science at Elon.

Animal Lovers Wanted: Pet Adoption Center enlists volunteer help from college students

You’ve probably seen the commercials. Those deep brown eyes that have cried countless puppy tears, the matted, flea-infested fur begging to be combed and rubbed, and the protruding rib cages, evidence of malnutrition and cruelty. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or ASPCA, is notorious for its heart wrenching commercials that may entice you to run out to your local pet adoption center or hug your own furry best friend a little closer.

Blandwood Mansion allows N.C. visitors to see the past

Progressive and modern might not be how you would describe a site rich in history, but that’s exactly how Blandwood Mansion’s Executive Director Benjamin Briggs said the landmark home was designed. Former North Carolina Governor John Morehead was the most notable owner of the home, who completed the mansion in 1846.

Grief, loss support group provides comfort for Elon faculty, staff

Elon University associate chaplain Rev. Julie Tonnesen said loss and grief are universal emotions, but found that they can be difficult for faculty and staff to process while continuing their usual routines. “Even when we show up to work, that doesn’t mean that we get to put the rest of our lives on the back burner,” Tonnesen said. “Our grief comes with us. It’s not something we can just keep on a shelf at home.” In collaboration with Counseling Services, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, began offering a monthly group for faculty and staff to support those affected by loss.

45 años después de los primeros casos de VIH/SIDA reportados en Estados Unidos, la lucha contra esta enfermedad está lejos de terminar, especialmente en el sur del país. Según los datos más recientes de los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades, el sur representó el 52% de todos los diagnósticos de VIH en Estados Unidos en 2023. "Sabemos que el VIH/SIDA ha afectado de manera desproporcionada a las personas de color y a las personas LGBTQ+ de color en este país", afirmó Jeff Bennett, profesor de estudios de comunicación en la Universidad de Vanderbilt. "Hay muchas personas que viven en zonas rurales, existe desconfianza hacia los profesionales de la salud y persiste el estigma social".
