Shining light on security at Elon

Elon's Campus Security has had a blue light emergency system for many years. There are now 35 blue lights on campus, each of which function on a distress button that immediately calls police to the scene, with the goal of a two-minute response time. Each system costs between $5,500-$6,000 for all of the parts and installation.

Baseball holds on to beat Appalachian State 4-3

A four-run third inning was all the Elon University baseball team needed as the Phoenix held on to a 4-3 victory over Appalachian State University in the final game of the Elon Invitational March 6. Junior designated hitter CJ Young led off the frame with a walk and came around to score on junior second baseman Nick Zammarelli’s RBI double.

Women's tennis sweeps home doubleheader

The Elon University women’s tennis team shut out both North Carolina A&T State University and North Carolina Central University to extend its winning streak to three games Saturday. “Today was a great opportunity to get in a lot of matches and focus in a little bit more, especially on our doubles strategy,” said Elon head coach Elizabeth Anderson.

Men's tennis downed by No. 28 Old Dominion

The Elon University men’s tennis team won the doubles point but couldn’t hold on to the lead as No. 28 Old Dominion University snapped the Phoenix’ five-game win streak Saturday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. “I told our team we have to get a little bit tougher,” said Elon coach Michael Leonard, “I think we had to go through some of this to kind of get ourselves where we need to be in a month or so.” Juniors Chris Humphreys and Petar Tomic lived up to their billing as CAA Doubles Team of the Week, delivering a 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles — their fourth win in a row.

Baseball falls to Bowling Green

The Elon University baseball team’s four-game winning streak was snapped in a 6-2 loss to Bowling Green at Latham Park on March 4. Senior infielder Tyler McVicar hit his first home run of the season to give Elon (4-6) an early 1-0 lead at the bottom of the third inning.

‘The Energy Project’ offers insight for college students

Too overwhelmed with work to focus, I looked through social media to feed my procrastination. I then progressed to reading various articles in hopes of finding inspiration to do my work. Ironically, I came across The Energy Project, a company that works with organizations, professional coaches and individuals to improve workplace morale and in turn increase productivity. It has helped many big-name companies in various fields increase their success, including Google, Apple and Coca-Cola.

Prophetic justice: Music's ability for social change

Prophetic art is often described as a deep concept. It’s the idea that something creative can hold a perspective that makes people think about the future. It’s the idea that art and music can “create both rest and unrest in the soul,” said Rev. Julian “J.Kewst” DeShazier, a pastor, activist and hip-hop artist. In music, it makes the listener actively hear and perceive a message. It can enact social change.

Elon BrainCARE hosts discussion about concussions

Not long ago, people called it “getting your bell wrung”. Today, it goes by a more scientific classification—a concussion. This Thursday, Elon’s exercise science department held its annual Elon BrainCARE Symposium in Moseley’s McKinnon Hall.
