The Elon University women’s tennis team shut out both North Carolina A&T State University and North Carolina Central University to extend its winning streak to three games Saturday.

“Today was a great opportunity to get in a lot of matches and focus in a little bit more, especially on our doubles strategy,” said Elon head coach Elizabeth Anderson. “It was a great day for us. I’m excited about the way the players played.”

Elon (5-8) followed up its 7-0 victory over the Aggies of North Carolina A&T with a 4-0 win over the Eagles of North Carolina Central.

The Phoenix tried some new doubles lineups as freshman Maria Paraja and junior Natalia Janowicz picked up two doubles victories on the day. The newly formed pair of sophomores Erica Braschi and Kamilla Beisenova picked up a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles against N.C. Central.

Sophomore Olivia Lucas, Paraja, and Beisenova all won their singles matches against both schools. Lucas clinched the match against the Aggies with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles and won 6-0, 6-2 against N.C. Central.

Paraja picked up straight set victories against both opponents, 6-0, 6-0 against the Aggies at No. 4 singles and 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 singles against the Eagles. Beisenova won 7-5, 6-0 at No. 5 singles against the Aggies and 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles against N.C. Central.

“I think I started off my first match a little less confident, and that’s where I think the team really helped me,” said Beisenova. “A lot of them came out right on the court and they were cheering for me and telling me that I was playing well and to believe in myself. I think that really helped me in the second match, because I was more confident and it was a lot easier to play that way.”

The Phoenix looks to continue its win streak at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 12 at Davidson.
