Social media brings new wave of political information

Social media has become the top source of news for Millennials. No longer are students taking the time to sit down and watch broadcast news or read the newspaper — rather, they are flipping through newsfeeds on cellphones to get the latest updates on the presidential election.

Students stick around for summer jobs

While many students are beginning to gear up for their summer internships or stressing about not yet having one, others are choosing to stay at Elon University to work on campus. In the past, staying on campus for the summer has been affectionately termed “Camp Elon” for the more relaxed atmosphere that comes from fewer students and classes being in session.  Students remain on campus from June to August for several different reasons.

LGBTQIA athletes find match at Elon

The first time senior Jess Farmer and Aly Quintana ’15 met was a typical weekend evening for college students. In March 2013 — Quintana’s sophomore year, Farmer’s freshman year — some members of the Elon University women’s basketball team and softball team got together before heading out to parties for the evening. After spending time watching each other on the court and field, the two were finally able to connect, exchanging phone numbers before the night ended. The friendship then quickly developed into something more — but not without its fair share of thought.

Men's ultimate frisbee hosts regional tournament

The Elon University men's club ultimate frisbee team hosted the USA Ultimate Division III Atlantic Coast Regional tournament last weekend. Elon's team, which goes by Big Fat Bomb, hosted seven other schools over the two-day event, with four schools from North Carolina, two from Virginia, one from Maryland and one from Washington D.C. As club president of Big Fat Bomb, senior Evan Miceli was the coordinator of the tournament and felt that the Campus Recreation department's club sports division helped him immensely with running the tournament. "I'm really happy with club sports," Miceli said.

Softball seniors shine in upset win

The goal for softball pitchers is to throw about 80 to 90 pitches in a normal seven-inning game, but what would the goal be for a 15-inning game? Apparently, for senior pitcher Kayla Caruso, that number is 197. That’s how many pitches she threw in a complete game victory against No. 6 James Madison University Saturday, leading the Phoenix to a 5-4 victory in Game 1 of a doubleheader. “I’ve never pitched that many innings in a game before,” Caruso said. Caruso has been pitching at Elon all four years of her collegiate career, and it seems only fitting that she had one of her best outings of her career on her Senior Day.

Students create documentary of formerly incarcerated women

“It stopped being a class project a long time ago” said sophomore Lauren Duncan on the film “Rebuilding” for which she and her two classmates seniors Jacky Shacknow and Amory Parks won second place at RiverRun International Film Festival’s Pitch Fest in Winston Salem. The film was made as part of their “Producing the Documentary” course taught by Assistant Professor Nicole Triche.

Softball splits doubleheader with No. 6 JMU

The Elon University softball team split a doubleheader against No. 6 James Madison University Saturday, winning 5-4 win in 15 innings in the first game and losing 8-1 in the second game. The first game saw four lead changes occur throughout the marathon three-hour, 41-minute endeavor.

University supports student-led relief efforts

Tragedy struck Ecuador April 16 in the form of a 7.8-magnitude earthquake. Despite tremendous relief efforts and searches within the country, there were more than 650 casualties and 16,000 injuries. Reeling from news of the horrifying humanitarian crisis, countries around the world responded by sending food, clothing and money to the survivors.

In CAA, more opportunities for institutional, athletic growth

Elon University’s move to the Colonial Athletic Association, announced May 2013 but not official until July 2014, was met with considerable financial weight and legitimate concerns with regard to travel and level of competition. But about two years in, fresh off the first CAA Championships that Elon hosted, it’s clear that the move was the right move for not just the athletic department, but the institution as a whole. Elon’s Jimmy Powell Tennis Center hosted the CAA Tennis Championships last weekend, with both the Phoenix men and women falling in tight semifinal matches.

CHAMPS program continues promoting student mentorship

'10 T.J. Douglas, an Elon University varsity basketball player at the time, was working on his research topic when he noticed the lack of health programs for young boys in Alamance County. While there were well-known programs for girls such as Girls on the Run, he noticed boys seemed to have limited options.

GLC, CREDE host annual Kiki Ball

Late Night Elon collaborated with the Gender & LGBTQIA Center to host the annual Kiki Ball celebration. Inspired by LGBTQIA ballroom culture, the event is historically centered around queer and trans people of color and serves as a way to honor diversity in expression within LGBTQIA communities. The evening featured music, a stage, and a panel of judges, including an Elon alum, David Carter, who was excited to see the event come together.

‘Being first’: Elon’s Black Solidarity Conference hosts first keynote panel

The Center for Race, Ethnicity and Diversity Education hosted the 12th annual Black Solidarity Day Conference where students, faculty and staff, and community members gathered together in McKinnon Hall to discuss topics on allyship, anti-racism, anti-black racism, wellness in Black communities, Blackness in a global context, intersectionality in Black communities and socio-political activism.
