Town of Elon passes 3 cent tax hike

The town of Elon will see a three cent tax hike this upcoming fiscal year. The Board of Alderman passed a $10.7 million budget on Tuesday, which was introduced by Elon Town Manager Richard White and will increase the tax rate from 42 cents per $100 valuation to 45 cents. The tax increase, according to White, will pay for six new positions, including the conversion of a position with the Recreation and Parks department from part time to full time, new equipment for town departments, and a major town project. The budget includes the addition of three firefighters and two police officers, spending $64,000 on an excavator and trailer for the Public Works Department, $138,000 for three police vehicles and $515,000 on water projects.

Administrative changes in the office of Student Life

Administrative changes have been made in the office of Student Life, according to an e-mail sent to Elon Faculty and Staff members, and will become effective immediately.  Jon Dooley, former Vice President for Student Life and Dean of students, as of this morning, notified the Elon Faculty and Staff that he will no longer serve as the Dean of Students and will now only serve as the Vice President for Student Life.

Molly Offstein to be transported to medical center in Maryland, still in vegetative state

Molly Offstein is leaving the Shepherd Center in Atlanta to receive treatment at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in her home state of Maryland, according to a Facebook post from her father, Evan Offstein. Offstein is still recovering after being hit by a car in March. The post provided an update on Offstein's health, explaining that her physical health is improving, but she has not showed signs of any significant recovery from her traumatic brain injury (TBI). She has not exited a vegetative state.

Hames qualifies for NCAA track and field championship

One member of the Elon University women’s track and field has qualified for the NCAA outdoor championships in Eugene, Oregon. Junior Bryanna Hames is the first athlete in program history to qualify after finishing 11th overall in the discus at the NCAA East Preliminaries on Friday, May 26.

Commencement draws more than 10,000 people to celebrate Class of 2017

Aside from the conferring of almost 1,400 degrees, Elon University's 127th Commencement ceremony yesterday saw two speeches partially spoken in Spanish, a New York Giants ballon strapped to a tassel, and a successful marriage proposal.  It was anything but conventional. Headlined by Univision reporter Maity Interiano's '07 as the keynote speaker, the Emmy-winning journalist challenged the graduating Class of 2017 to be fearless, take chances, and embrace adversity.  "More than ever we are seeing young people going after ther dreams," Interinano said.

Commencement, no longer 'Under the Oaks'

Traditions have long been a staple of the culture at Elon University — among them is the annual Commencement “Under the Oaks.” But despite its long history, commencement will no longer be held “Under the Oaks.” According to Executive Director of Cultural and Special Programs Jeff Clark, commencement will be located on Scott Plaza for the foreseeable future.

Elon University dance team wins 2 national titles

The Elon dance team huddled on stage with linked arms, waiting to hear their placement in Division I pom at the 2026 National Dance Association’s College National Championships. When the announcer proclaimed Elon champions, the dancers burst into cheers, realizing they’d secured Elon’s first pom category win in program history. The next day, they became two-time national champions with a first place finish in Division I hip hop.
