Elon University senior Jordan Barrett was eating lunch when he got the call  that changed his life.

The left-hand pitcher had been selected in the Major League Baseball Draft and is headed to join the Toronto Blue Jays.

With the 23rd pick in the 18th round of the 2017 draft (549 player overall), the Blue Jays selected the Margate, Florida native.

Barrett had a 4-5 record and a 3.22 ERA this year in his 17 appearances on the mound for the Phoenix. Barrett struck out 100 hitters in his 78.1 innings pitched, ranking him third in the Colonial Athletic Association. He also served as a team captain for the 2017 season.

With his selection, at least one Elon player has been selected in 10 of the last 11 MLB Drafts. Nick Zammarelli was drafted last year and is now with the Seattle Mariners organization.

Barrett reports to Blue Jays minicamp on Friday, June 16.
