Football leads Appalachian State 24-14 at halftime

The Elon University football team leads No. 8 ranked Appalachian State University 24-14 at halftime in Rhodes Stadium. The Phoenix scored the game's first 21 points to take a commanding early lead and has not trailed since. After an Appalachian State fumble, Elon got on the board first with a five-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Thomas Wilson to sophomore wide receiver Rasaun Rorie, who caught the first touchdown pass of his career. The Elon defense then forced Appalachian State to punt, and an 11-yard punt set up Elon with starting field position at the Appalachian State 43 yard line.

Despite growing trend, Elon has no plans to offer midnight classes

The registration period at Elon is one that can be stressful, time-consuming and difficult, but there is a new idea that may just make this often dreaded time a much simpler one. According to a recent article in USA Today, many colleges are adding midnight classes to their schedules to make room for more students to get the classes they want. Beginning at Bunker Hill community college in Boston, this idea was brought about with the hopes of offering students more variety in their class schedules. Mark Albertson, registrar and assistant to the provost at Elon University, said it has been several years since midnight classes have been considered.

Sergeant Crystal Sharpe: officer, professor, loyal friend

Sitting in her office, gun holstered and badge in full visibility, Crystal Sharpe, adjunct professor of human service studies, reminisces on the 6-foot wall she put up in her backyard to practice scaling for the physical test at the police academy. "Thank God they took that out of the test," she said. Now a sergeant at the Graham Police Department, Sharpe said she found her true passion in law enforcement. But having such a prestigious title as a woman working in law enforcement is no small feat. "Even as a very small child, she had a very unique personality," said Libby Sharpe, Crystal Sharpe's mother.

Against ASU, football hopes to capitalize on Furman upset

After a loss at Wofford College put the Phoenix under .500 for the first time since its season-opening loss at Vanderbilt University, Elon University head coach Jason Swepson wanted to get back to that mark. "I told the team after the (Wofford) game, 'Let's get to 5-5, and put all our chips in against App,'" he said. The words proved to be prophetic, as the Phoenix defeated Furman University 41-34 Nov.

Men's basketball falls to UMass in season opener

The Elon University men's basketball team returns home at 8 p.m. Friday, in Alumni Gym to face Division III University of New Jersey Rutgers-Camden. The Phoenix will continue its non-conference play, as the team's first five games on the schedule are against teams from outside the Southern Conference. The University of Massachusetts Amherst defeated Elon 85-67 Nov.

CD sales to support ABSS art education

Alamance County musicians are a close-knit bunch. So when word got out that Elon University's senior sound and video specialist Bryan Baker was looking for musicians to record a CD to benefit a charitable organization, he found 20 artists willing to sit down in a recording studio and make art happen. As a part of a service sabbatical, Baker contacted these artists and and put the CD, "Make Art Happen," together with other members of the Elon community including professors and students. Service sabbaticals are offered to staff only, not faculty, through Project Pericles.

Elon University's cheer team builds community, connection

Beyond the sidelines, Elon University’s cheer team is embracing a new chapter, not just as athletes, but as competitors entering Game Day cheer competitions for the first time in program history. Elon’s cheer team recently participated in the College Classic Competition hosted by Dance Team Union, which provides both virtual and in-person competitive opportunities for collegiate cheer and dance programs. Elon cheer entered the virtual competition in the Spirit Showdown Gameday Division and placed first. Assistant cheer coach Marcus Thompson said he sees passion through the team, especially as they connect with prospective students.

OPINION: You should be keeping up with the partisans

Why hate some politicians when you can learn to hate them all? This is the half-ironic question that ricocheted in my mind as circumstances dictated that the story I’d been working on for a few would have to take a new angle. My original plan had been to attend an Elon College Republicans meeting and get a sense of how the Grand Old Party’s future representatives were handling the latest release of the Epstein Files, along with the various other misgivings of the current administration.
