Big freshman class set to make mark on the diamond

As we grow older, certain events signal rites of passage that impact our lives. Things like a first crush,  and the first time behind the wheel of a car are both signs that we’re growing older – both symbols of taking life by the horns. One Friday in January, eight Elon University freshman softball players stepped into a makeshift photo booth in the media relations office tucked away in Alumni Gym for their first headshots as college athletes.

‘She Loves Me’ sets high bar for new semester

Setting foot in McCrary Theatre for a new production by the Department of Performing Arts is nothing if not intriguing. In the last calendar year, the stage has been home to a number of characters — struggling bohemian artists in New York’s Lower East Side; a tribe of politically active hippies; and now, in “She Loves Me,” a group of employees at a parfumerie in 1930s Hungary. It’s a far cry from “Rent” and “Hair,” two high-energy rock musicals that have recently graced the McCrary stage.

Theater dorks rejoice – TV grants us another musical!

For us Broadway fans, it felt like our unspoken dreams were finally heard in 2009 when Fox premiered “Glee,” its show about a high school glee club featuring multiple musical performances an episode. Aside from the occasional movie-musicals (2008’s “Mamma Mia” atrocity doesn’t count), we theater kids previously had to actually visit the theater to see musical performances of Broadway quality.

The modern day confessional

Go into any college dorm room and piles of textbooks litter the floor. But when it comes to a guide to life and how to make it through, students are often on their own.  And when it comes to dealing with the harder issues, many students are at a loss. Emotional issues used to be discussed at the family dinner table, or for many, answered in church.  But where are students turning now? Frank Warren, the founder of PostSecret, created an online outlet for expression by asking random people to fill out postcards with their secrets and mail them to him.  Seven years later, his company has exploded. The anonymity of the site generates honesty and connections, but are people really getting the support they need? Relief of honesty and restrictions of anonymity Megan McCarthy, a sophomore at Elon, had an opportunity to hear Warren present his initiative in high school. “What struck me the most was that so many people were willing to stand up in a room of hundreds of people and admit secrets that they have never told anyone,” she said.
