With Spring Break less than three weeks away, students are dreaming of sunshine, shorelines and sweet spare time.

Whether or not your vacation plans involve such leisure, Campus Recreation has a program that will put you in the Spring Break spirit.

The Aquatics Department of Campus Recreation organizes a program called Swim to Florida every Spring Semester to encourage physical activity and healthy habits. Participants choose one of three locations in Florida: Citrus Springs, Groveland, or Jupiter; each lap swam in the pool equates to a mile towards the participants destination. Students complete their goals by swimming to their chosen destinations.

Swim to Florida has been a tradition at Elon since 1998. Florida was chosen because it is a traditional Spring Break destination and the distance is attainable through a six week program. This year the theme is Orange Groves. According to Chelsea Jacobs, the Aquatics Team Leader, past themes have included baseball and beaches.

“Our themes are based on anything that has to do with Florida,” said Jacobs. “Who doesn’t love Florida, oranges, and Spring Break?”

The program encourages students to utilize Elon’s swimming facilities.

“Swim to Florida is a great program designed to get Elon’s student body into the pool for a less frequently used form of exercise on campus,” said Campus Recreation lifeguard Daniel Baquet.

The program is a creative way of fostering healthy workout habits.

“My favorite part about the program is that it brings people in who don't normally swim,” said lifeguard Kelly Beane. “We get a lot of friends who sign up together and it makes for healthy competition.”

Participants can choose how they want to complete the distance. According to Jacobs, 51 have signed up so far. Since the program runs from Feb 20 until March 16, there is plenty of time to log miles. Swimmers can sign up throughout the entirety of the program.

As a perk for participating in Swim to Florida, participants receive a free t-shirt for reaching their goals. An additional perk?
