Elon Head Football coach Jason Swepson fired

Athletic Director David Blank announced today that Elon's head football coach, Jason Swepson, has been fired. "I want to thank Coach Swepson for his hard work and dedication to our football program during his time at Elon," Blank said.

'No quit' attitude one of many bright spots in Elon's NCAA Tournament loss

LOS ANGELES — Trailing 4-0 against No. 1 UCLA in the second round of the NCAA Tournament as the seconds ticked off the clock, the Elon University men’s soccer team was still fighting to breakup the shutout even with the game well out of reach. In the 88th minute, Elon battled for a corner and while it couldn’t convert and the game ended in the 4-0 shutout, one thing stood out about Elon’s night: there was no quit in the Phoenix. “Quitting is not an option,” said junior forward Jason Waterman.

The BBQ state: Unique origins of barbecue define North Carolina history, culture

Political debates change with every season, but one argument that will never end in North Carolina is where the best barbecue comes from. Many native Carolinians have an opinion on which barbecue joint is the most famous or authentic, and it is often a joint around his or her hometown.  A quick description of the taste and texture of their local barbecue recipe is followed by a longer story describing the history and culture behind their specific shop, as well as the reason why it’s home to the “most delicious barbecue in the world.” Barbecue joints can be argued about for days, but the real question remains — What comprises a great barbecue sandwich, and how did North Carolinians become so loyal to pulled pork slathered with sauce? Elon has no answers, No. 1 UCLA rolls in NCAA Tournament

The Phoenix outshot the Bruins 12-9 in the contest, but UCLA capitalized on its chances where Elon did not, leading to the 4-0 victory for the Bruins at home in Drake Stadium in Los Angeles Sunday, Nov.

Timeline of the 73 hours between NCAA Tournament games for Elon men’s soccer

At 9:39 p.m. Eastern Time Thursday, Nov. 21, the Elon University men’s soccer team and fans charged the playing surface at Rudd Field in chase of a shirtless Jason Waterman, a junior forward on the team who scored the game-winning penalty kick for the Phoenix just seconds before against Clemson University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The on-field celebration was all the time allotted for the Phoenix to bask in the team’s first NCAA Tournament victory, a 4-1 penalty kick defeat of the Tigers.

North Carolinians rate public schools poorly in new Elon Poll

As K-12 students across North Carolina prepare for their winter break, the Elon University Poll released poll data on Dec. 17 finding that most North Carolinians gave mediocre or poor grades to public schools across the state. “The states have always had deep authority on education, but there has been more federal involvement in various years,” Director of the Elon University Poll Jason Husser said. “So we thought, well, this is the time for us to really look in depth about what do people think about North Carolina schools.”

Grief, loss support group provides comfort for Elon faculty, staff

Elon University associate chaplain Rev. Julie Tonnesen said loss and grief are universal emotions, but found that they can be difficult for faculty and staff to process while continuing their usual routines. “Even when we show up to work, that doesn’t mean that we get to put the rest of our lives on the back burner,” Tonnesen said. “Our grief comes with us. It’s not something we can just keep on a shelf at home.” In collaboration with Counseling Services, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, began offering a monthly group for faculty and staff to support those affected by loss.
