Elon University Police have arrested and charged a man suspected of indecently exposing himself to a female student Feb. 18.

Colin Mahoney, 31, was arrested yesterday in Chapel Hill, where he resides, according to an email sent by Smith Jackson, vice president of student life. Mahoney was then transferred to the Alamance County Jail, where he will be notified that he is now banned from Elon University's campus, the email went on to say.

Mahoney's arrest was made possible by Elon's network of video cameras that record traffic throughout campus, Jackson wrote. He said an "extensive analysis" of the camera records yielded the license plate number of Mahoney's silver Nissan truck.

The female student originally reported the incident to Elon University Police  around 12:30 p.m. Feb. 18. She said an unknown male stopped to ask her a question near the intersection of O'Kelley and Haggard Avenues. When she approached, the student said, she saw the man was exposing himself.
