As the clear-cut favorite in the Southern Conference heading into the 2014 spring season, the Elon University women’s tennis team had high expectations after falling just short of a conference title in 2013. After a program-best 21 wins in 2013, Elon advanced to the championship match of the SoCon Tournament, where it faced the College of Charleston, winner of the previous five SoCon titles.  The Phoenix, playing on its home court at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, fought back against the Cougars after trailing early but ultimately lost, 4-3. In 2014, the Cougars left for the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), which opened the door for the Phoenix.  Since Elon will be leaving for the CAA in 2015, the feeling around the team was 2014 was the year to win.  But after an inconsistent start to the year, that feeling was nearly lost. Men's tennis to build on success in NCAAs

Teams don’t reach their preseason goals every year.  Injuries and other variables often shake things up in unimaginable ways, prompting the phrase, “That’s why they play the games.”  But the Elon University men’s tennis team achieved its goal of winning the Southern Conference Tournament and making the NCAA Tournament in perhaps the easiest way possible.

Georgia Southern no-hits Elon in SoCon Tournament

In its first game of the Southern Conference tournament, the Elon University softball team made history, just not the kind it was hoping to. The Phoenix became the first team in tournament history to be no-hit, losing 4-0 to senior starter Sarah Purvis and the Georgia Southern University Eagles May 7 at UNCG softball field in Greensboro, N.C. Purvis, the three-time SoCon Pitcher of the Year, struck out 13 batters and scattered two walks while getting just enough run support from her offense to earn her 19th win of the season. The Eagles jumped on Phoenix junior starter Caitlin O’Shea early, scoring the game’s first run in the bottom of the first.  With a runner on third and two out, O’Shea’s pitch squirted away from freshman catcher Carey Million, allowing a runner to scamper home and give the home team a 1-0 lead. Georgia Southern would add another in the bottom of the second on a mammoth home run from  Kaitlyn Johnson to right center, a solo shot, to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, a fielder’s choice groundout to second with runners on the corners gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead. Georgia Southern would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI groundout to second with the bases loaded to give the Eagles their margin of victory. O’Shea (8-14) was saddled with the loss despite six solid innings, giving up four runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out one. The Phoenix will play an elimination game at 11:30 a.m.

Elon women's club Ultimate Frisbee heads to nationals

It’s the first day of class in a new semester at Elon University. The professor has every student go around and say his or her name, hometown and one interesting fact. Junior Helen Peplowski says she’s on Elon’s Ultimate Frisbee team, and a series of “oohs” and “ahhs” comes from the rest of the class. “Everyone’s usually pretty interested when you tell them,” Peplowski said.

In the first game of the season, the Elon University baseball team led by three runs over the University of Cincinnati entering the ninth inning. The Phoenix then surrendered three runs that sent the game into extra innings, where sophomore catcher Danny Lynch provided the game-winning double. Elon head coach Mike Kennedy remarked then about the competitive spirit he saw in the dugout when his team faced adversity late in the game.

Frida Jansaker named SoCon Player of the Month

Senior Elon University women’s tennis player Frida Jansaker added to her list of accolades for the 2014 season May 6, as the Southern Conference announced that she was named Player of Month for the month of April. Jansaker, who was named to the All-SoCon second team, went 8-0 in singles and 6-2 in doubles play in the month of April.  The senior went undefeated at the SoCon Tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn., in mid-April, where Elon captured its first championship in program history. Jansaker’s performance at the tournament earned her Most Outstanding Player honors, capping off an impressive season in which she posted a record of 17-4 in singles play at the No.
