Defense dominates in Spring Game

Throughout spring practice, the Elon University football team has seen the number of players in camp dwindle — especially on the defensive end. This is, in part, because of graduating seniors, as well as some injured players. For the players who are still at Elon and are still participating in spring practices, the lack of depth means an increase in practice time for other players. At the spring football game on Saturday night, the defense shone brightest at Rhodes Stadium, as the 6-3 final score showed that the increased reps are paying off for many of the returners on defense. “We found out we are a lot stronger mentally,” said junior defensive lineman Dominic Bourne.

Softball secures 11-2 win against NC A&T

The Elon University softball team had a plentiful number of hits in its 11-2 victory Tuesday against North Carolina A&T State University. The Phoenix had 14 hits on the day, with three from freshmen Hannah Olson and three from Kara Shutt. Shutt also five RBIs. The scoring started for the Phoenix in the first, thanks to Shutt’s two-run double.

After Nepal earthquake, Elon does what it can

For many, tears flowed. They gathered not only to send support to Nepal — a nation left picking up the pieces of destruction and loss after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake Saturday — but to also lend support to Elon University community members from the affected regions, helpless and far from home.  As the sunlight filtered through the large windows of the Sacred Space in the Numen Lumen Pavilion Monday afternoon, University Chaplain Jan Fuller, along with about 30 other community members, gathered, lit candles and asked, “Why?” “I want to light a candle today in the search for meaning,” Fuller said as she opened the campus gathering in the aftermath of Saturday’s Nepalese earthquake.

Festivus brings mud damages, university ceases to provide hoses

Trails of mud surfaced across campus and throughout residence halls following Festivus Sunday aftenoon, causing damages and Physical Plant cleanup crews in the days to come. Festivus, an annual  student-run event started by students more than a decade ago is separate from the university and brought students together off campus in the Sheridan Apartments. Robert Buchholz, director of physical plant, said damages from Festivus included muddy handprints on a column in Colonnades D,  a sink clogged with mud in Danieley C, mud on a carpet in Danieley N and mud markings near Lindner Hall, the Global Neighborhood and seven Mill Point buildings.  He said he does not know the estimated cost in damages. One thing was missing on campus from recent years: hoses outside of residence halls, provided by the university.

Aaron Mellette Returns to the NFL

The two-time first team FCS All-American announced Monday evening that he signed a deal with the New York Jets via Instagram. Stephen Hawking answered a question about Zayn Malik, and it was perfect

Have no fear, One Direction fans. An alternate universe where Zayn Malik hasn’t left One Direction and is still touring alongside his four mates may exist — at least according to Stephen Hawking. The legendary theoretical physicist, cosmologist and author spoke at the Sydney Opera House last Saturday to discuss topics like the future of our planet and his diagnosis with ALS. During the Q&A portion of the night, a clever audience member posed the question: “What do you think is the cosmological effect of Zayn leaving One Direction and consequently breaking the hearts of millions of teenage girls across the world?” And Hawking’s response was perfect. “Finally, a question about something important,” he said.

Update on student involved in N. Williamson Ave. car accident

Gabriela Rosales, the first-year student hit by a car on North Williamson Avenue in mid-March has just been transferred to WakeMed where she will begin her rehabilitation process. According to her CaringBridge site, Rosales was transported from the UNC hospital on Thursday, April 23 in order to begin therapy.

Burlington, N.C. businesses struggle to stay afloat

Fifteen minutes away from Elon's campus is a small shopping center off of North Church St. Cum Park Plaza is home to a number of businesses, but it also hosts a number of empty lots where stores and restaurants used to reside. Vaughan McCraw is the store manager of Schewel Furniture Company, one of the businesses in the plaza.
