Put more importance on SGA elections

 

Around this time of year, seeing frantic yet determined students walking around campus with a packet and pen in their hands asking random students for their signature is very common. Often, students comply without hesitation, adding their name to a list of other students without asking many questions. They go on with their day. But these signatures prove to be far more important to the lives of Elon University students than they seem to view them.

Freshman men's basketball forward finds balance in his game

Head coach Matt Matheny said Tyler Seibring is a changed man. The freshman forward has been a staple for the Elon University men’s basketball team, starting in all 27 games thanks to some necessary bulking in the off-season. “What he’s done since he set foot on campus in June is remarkable,” Matheny said. “The way he transformed his body to get ready for a grueling first year [of college].”

Baseball finds new excitement

As a new season approaches for the Elon University baseball team, head coach Mike Kennedy has noticed something about this group of players that makes them stand out from his previous teams at Elon. “We have more baseball rats,” Kennedy said.

Elon raises tuition by 2.87 percent

The Elon University Board of Trustees approved its 2016-17 fiscal year budget Thursday, Feb. 11, increasing tuition by 2.87 percent — the increase amounts to $912. With an increase of $517 in room, board and fees, the total package cost will go up by 3.31 percent.

The 'Weekend Update' for Elon

Jost will be performing at Elon on Feb. 24 in McCrary Theater. Tickets were available starting Feb. 15 at 10 a.m. in Moseley 207. The event is sponsored by SUB and is free. There is a one ticket per person limit, and a Phoenix card needs to be shown to receive a ticket.

Former men's soccer players sign with former coach

Fomer Elon University men’s soccer head coach Darren Powell signed two former Elon players — defender Sam McBride and midfielder Miguel Salazar — to contracts with San Antonio FC, the club announced Monday. Powell was named head coach of the expansion club in January, and the two former players will play in the United Soccer League (USL) for San Antonio FC, which is the third tier of the soccer system in the United States. “We are very happy for both Miguel and Sam to realize their dream as professional players,” said Elon head coach Chris Little.

Area high school students get jump start on college

"You're allowed to eat in class. I love it. You're also allowed to just get up and go to the bathroom without signing anything or taking a pass," high school senior Laci Breen said. Breen has gotten a newfound taste of independence in a college classroom as part of Collegiate Start at Elon, a program that lets area high school students take up to two college courses.

Revived campus organization supports U.S. troops and their families

Team Hero at Elon University is an organization on campus whose goal is to connect the Elon Community with members of the military and support members of military families. The organization gives support to members of the military and their families mainly through sending care packages, holding bake sales and letter writing campaigns. David Brooks says to make more friends, develop social connections

David Brooks thinks young adults should date more. The author and former columnist shared this idea to a sold-out audience in Alumni Gym on Sept. 25 as Elon University’s Fall Convocation speaker. Brooks said dating was a significant source of education for his generation. And a lack of dating isn’t the only challenge Generation Z faces when it comes to social connection, according to Brooks.

Elon women’s soccer digs deep to defeat Stony Brook

Elon women’s soccer hosted Stony Brook University on Sept. 24 at Rudd Field. The Phoenix battled a tough match against the Seawolves, ultimately coming away with a 2-1 win. The Phoenix are currently undefeated at home, moving to the top of the CAA South with a 7-1-2 season record.
