Elon Eats: Warm atmosphere at Filament Coffee and Tea

Something about the twinkling lights across the ceiling and local art hanging from the walls make Filament Coffee + Tea feel like home. Less than 30 minutes west of Elon University in downtown Mebane, Filament is a cozy cafe dedicated to serving fresh coffee, tea and pastries, as well as showcasing the work of local artisans. One of Filament’s baristas, Karly Thomas, said that the cafe attracts a variety of customers, making it an interesting place to spend your time. “One of the things I love is the diversity of the people that come in,” she said.

Men's basketball reflects on strong regular season

Even though the Elon University men’s basketball team is looking ahead and preparing for the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament, head coach Matt Matheny took some time after Saturday’s 81-59 win over the University of Delaware to think big-picture. In its third season in the CAA, the Phoenix finished the regular season 18-13 overall and 10-8 in conference play, good for a tie for fourth place in one of the best mid-major conferences in the country.

'My Black is' project hopes to break down barriers

“My Black is,” is a simple yet complex phrase- just like blackness. For senior Chann Little, it is the title of his recent video project which displays what black students on campus define their blackness as with a one-word answer. Little was inspired for this project after seeing the phrase “my black is solid,” printed on shirts that students wore during Black Solidarity day, a day-long event sponsored by the CREDE for students that identify as black. “My black is black people labeling themselves in positive ways,” Little said, “I just wanted to add on that and make it where we can reclaim our own blackness because I feel like society labels black people a lot.”   This project is part of Little’s blog “Chann Daily,” which he began in November of 2016.

Elon student arrested for larceny, communicating threats

Ayana Joyner was arrested Feb. 21 and charged with larceny, communicating threats and resisting a public officer. Joyner was an Elon University student at the time of the arrest, but the Office of the Registrar confirmed that she has withdrawn from the university.

Men's basketball drops 2OT thriller to Northeastern 105-104

In the wildest game of the Elon University men’s basketball season, sophomore forward Tyler Seibring’s jumper at the buzzer couldn’t fall a second time, as the Phoenix lost to Northeastern University 105-104 in double overtime Thursday night. With 2.2 seconds left, Seibring — who sent the game to overtime by making a similar shot on a similar play — caught sophomore guard Dainan Swoope’s inbound pass, pump-faked, and bumped into senior guard/forward Jimmy Marshall, but missed the shot, leaving Elon listening for a whistle that never came. “It was similar,” said Elon head coach Matt Matheny.

Marc Reeves tabbed as Elon men's soccer coach

The Elon University men's soccer team has hired Marc Reeves as its new head coach, the school announced late Wednesday night. Reeves had previously been the head coach at Radford University for seven seasons, leading the Highlanders to the NCAA Tournament the past two seasons.

Senior pursues dreams with release of 1st EP: Hello Sunshine.

Since watching Selena for the first time at age 2, senior  and Musical Theater major Auston Henderson has always knew he wanted to be a singer—and now with the release of his first EP just a few weeks away—his dreams are beginning to come true. Henderson—a Houston, Texas native—grew up singing choir and for his senior year in high school, decided to move to Virginia and attend the Governor’s School of the arts where he could study musical theater more seriously.

Alamance County community members gather to protest N.C. HB 958

The Poor People’s Campaign North Carolina Division hosted a protest against N.C. House Bill 958, a bill focused on new voting regulations, in front of Elon’s Town Hall. Approximately 40 community members attended the protest, which lasted around an hour Monday evening.

N.C. attorney general will not sign new Duke Energy settlement

North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson is not joining a proposed settlement submitted by Duke Energy Carolinas, the largest electricity provider in Alamance County. Jackson acknowledged the concessions Duke Energy has made, but he was not satisfied with the proposed rates, according to a press release by the North Carolina Department of Justice.
