Women's soccer scores early, often in win over Francis Marion

The Elon University women's soccer team scored early and often Tuesday night, defeating Francis Marion University 6-0 in Florence, S.C., in a late non-conference matchup. Senior defender Mel Insley got the Phoenix on the board in the 14th minute, scoring her third goal of the season, on all free kicks.

The silence of hopelessness

As you all know, last week’s school shooting at the Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, was the fourth mass murder this year of Americans by American gunmen and approximately the 200th since 2006 in this country. The questions we should ask are simple: “Why does it keep on happening?” and “How can we stop it from happening again and again?” The answers are, unfortunately, not that simple.

For over three years I have run a monthly science education program at Fat Frogg called "Tectonic Plates: Alamance County's Science Cafe." We meet 2nd Tuesdays at 7-8pm, there is no entry fee, and you can expect a lively event in a relaxed atmosphere without all the technical jargon. This Tuesday the visiting scientist is Professor Cindy Bennett from Physician's Assistant Studies at Elon.

Men’s soccer forward returns to family home

When senior forward Cooper Vandermaas-Peeler arrived on Elon University’s campus in January 2015 he wasn’t alone.  The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill transfer not only joined eager new teammates but also enjoyed a homecoming of sorts with close friends and family. Though, Cooper has a new role for the Phoenix.

The Elon University football team has had struggles on offense this season, as they currently rank 120th out of 123 Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams in total offense. The inability to move the ball on offense has given the special teams unit plenty of opportunities.

Itzhak Perlman fills Fall Convocation with classical music

The first time Itzhak Perlman played his idol Yehudi Menuhin’s violin, he knew he had found the one. “I played a couple of notes on that violin and said to myself, ‘I’ve died and gone to heaven,’” Perlman said to a packed Alumni Gym Tuesday afternoon, the guest of honor at Elon University’s Fall Convocation. Two weeks later, as the young Perlman negotiated a home purchase, he received an un- expected phone call with news most-welcome: the out-of-reach violin of his dreams was for sale.

Encourage bus service for more opportunities for students

Recently, the Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation (PART) has established a new express bus route running between Greensboro and Chapel Hill: Route 4, or the Alamance Burlington line. As the name might imply, this bus route has a stop in local Burlington — the Alamance Regional Medical Center (ARMC) — only about four miles from campus.

The past two seasons have told different stories for the Elon University women’s soccer team. The 2013 version scored twice as many goals as they gave up, scoring 56 goals and allowing 28 in the 22 matches the team played.

Elon student digs into Burlington’s past after historic hotel demolition

The Rockefeller Integrated Hotel stood on Burlington’s Maple Avenue before being demolished a few weeks ago. Created by McBride “Mack” Thompson, a prominent African American entrepreneur in the Jim Crow South, the hotel was both his home and a place for Black travelers to stay somewhere safe. A single box of papers was recovered from the demolition site by a neighbor. Marshall Sears, a sophomore researching African American entrepreneurship in Petersburg, digitizes documents including those found in the demolition, as a part of his undergraduate research.

NC state legislature yet to set state budget

North Carolina is still the only state without a budget. The current state funding is using budget numbers from 2023, the last time a budget was passed. The state passes a biennial budget which appropriates funds for two years.
