Correspondents' Corner - April 25

Leigh Iler London — When people travel abroad, they often want to try local cuisines.  While England is known for certain dishes, including fish and chips and shepherd’s pie, the London area also has an assortment of ethnic options.  In addition to foreign foods, McDonald’s golden arches can be spotted on practically every street corner.   There are other chains in the city, including Domino’s, KFC and even Krispy Kreme.  This doughnut establishment, founded in North Carolina, is a warm reminder of home.  If only London had Cookout, I would never need to return.  Needless to say, one can eat a variety of foods while in London, both native and ethnic. Rebecca Cummings Yokohama, Japan — We are in Japan, our last port of the semester, and we are squeezing every experience and  moment out of it. Right now is also peak cherry blossom season, and people have traveled from all over the country and other Asian nations to see them here in Yokohama.

Elon strives to preserve aesthetic appeal during time of transition

Incoming students have yet to see the university from which they will graduate. With the construction of new facilities including The Station at Mill Point, the Numen Lumen Multi-Faith Center and the Global Residential Neighborhood, new students will see a noticeable difference in the campus between their first visits and the day of their graduation. “I can’t imagine what the campus will look like in a few years,” said freshman Helen Peplowski.

Students celebrate retiring professor's 25-year career at Elon

Pride and passion were the theme words on a night celebrating the 25-year career of Jim Drummond, sport and event management professor at Elon University. “The Drummond Golf Classic” didn’t quite go off as planned because of Mother Nature, as heavy rain flooded The Challenge Golf Course, causing the scheduled tournament to be canceled and transforming the outing into The Drummond Banquet Dinner. Friends, fellow colleagues and students both past and present spent the evening sharing stories and praising Drummond's time at the institution. “A lot of people take pride in money and titles and things like that,” Drummond said.

A walk to remember

Last week I went on the best walk of my life. Jeff Stern, Claire Esparros and I met with Dr. Danieley to talk about his life at Elon. I spent the afternoon listening to the most precious stories with the most precious man, and the result was the most rewarding experience I’ve ever had as a journalist. Being able to help preserve the history of this university was so empowering.

International Briefs - April 25, 2012

Guantanamo Bay prisoners transferred to El Salvador The United States transferred two Chinese prisoners from Guantanamo Bay to El Salvador after holding them for a decade with no charges. China urged other countries not to accept the two men into their nations, but the El Salvadoran government agreed to let them settle down there in their own homes. The men’s attorney said they are happy in their new home in El Salvador. The Pentagon announced that with the departure of these two men, the Guantanamo prison population is now 169. Israel honors Holocaust victims Israelis celebrated Yom Hashoa, or Holocaust Remembrance Day, April 19 throughout the country.

Softball's week a tale of two outcomes

The Elon University softball team played four games this past weekend, looking to improve on their plus-.500 record as the season is nearing to a close. Phoenix womp Wolfpack 7-1 in non-conference play  The Phoenix defeated North Carolina State University 7-1 April 19, the first time in seven years that the Phoenix had come out on top of the Wolfpack. Elon senior pitcher Erin O’Shea (13-7) pitched four shutout innings, giving up just four hits and striking out three batters for the win.

Controversial ‘Kony 2012’ films elicit visible response from student activists

An Invisible Children representative who lived through the experience hiding from the Lord's Resistance Army, a rebel group concentrated in central Africa, as depicted in the “Kony 2012” films, addressed a crowd at Elon University April 23. As a 5-year-old in northern Uganda, Agnes Aromorach slept alone in the jungle each night, using the brush and the darkness to conceal herself from the LRA led by Joseph Kony. “It was so cold, I had no shelter and I was so scared of the darkness and the animals and just everything,” said Aromorach, who now works as a traveling volunteer, or roadie, for Invisible Children.

Men's tennis rides young wave into 2012-2013

Adversity was the name of the game this season for the Phoenix men’s tennis team. With more than half of the team being comprised of freshmen and only one senior who battled hip flexor problems all season, head coach Michael Leonard knew it would be an uphill battle all year long. “The whole season was about adversity,” Leonard said.

Earth Week events aim for lasting impact on student lifestyles

The Office of Sustainability's series of Earth Week events made practicing an eco-friendly lifestyle accessible by narrowing the focus of the global movement to Elon students specifically. Those involved in organizing the week’s events said they hoped students would be motivated to use their knowledge about sustainable living to engage in environmentally-friendly practices, said sophomore Lily Siegal, an Office of Sustainability intern. “People are becoming more and more educated about (sustainability), and now a lot of us know what we can do, and what we should be doing,” Siegal said.

Legislation opposing Amendment One generates discussion in SGA

Elon University’s Student Government Association partnered with Lauren Clapp, advocacy and eduation chair of Spectrum, last week to draft a resolution expressing SGA’s opposition to Amendment One, an issue in the upcoming North Carolina primary election May 8.

Multiple organizations find values rooted in Holocaust remembrance

The reading of the names of Holocaust victims revealed a connection to the past, according to Phil Smith, associate chaplain and director of Religious Life at Elon University.  While students, faculty and staff read the names aloud outside Moseley April 19 during the internationally recognized day for Holocaust Remembrance, many others walked past and continued with their normal business.
