Student-led book club unites leadership, literature

Few are strangers to failure. But Elon University’s book club, Read and Lead, selected this year’s book, “Failing Forward,” to teach students how to learn from failures and improve upon them. The Read and Lead program invites students to join a book club concerning leadership development.

Imam blasts misconceptions about Islam at Real Talk session

No question was off-limits to those gathered in Moseley Center’s Oak Room for “Some Real Talk with the Imam,” which invited members of the Elon community to receive clarification on common misconceptions about Islam. The event, hosted by Better Together, also offered a space for students to learn about the history and theology of the religion from Imam Abdullah Antepli, Muslim chaplain at Duke University. “It is the social homework of Americans to understand Islam as a religion and to understand Muslims as people,” Antepli said. Panel discussion offers diverse viewpoints on Christian tradition

A panel of four Elon University faculty and staff members came together Monday night in the Isabella Cannon Room to discuss the traditions and experiences that have shaped their understandings of Christianity. “For Christians, our point of view is formed by how we use and interpret the bible,” said associate chaplain Jan Fuller in her opening address.

McCrory, Christie rally for Republican support in Smithfield

More than 5,000 people attended a rally and barbeque supporting Pat McCrory the Republican candidate for governor Friday night in Smithfield, N.C. The event, held at a Central Tobacco Exchange, Inc. warehouse, featured appearances by major North Carolina Republican politicians and headlined New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. "We're gonna have a Carolina comeback and it starts tonight," McCrory, the former mayor of Charlotte, told the enthusiastic crowd. Women's soccer upsets Appalachian State, advances to SoCon tourney semifinals

Festivals continue despite economic situation in Spain

BARCELONA - Spain has been combating an economic recession and a 25 percent unemployment rate the past four years, and the end is nowhere in sight. Weekly transportation strikes and marches protesting high tax rates have erupted across the country. On September 25, 6,000 protestors stormed the Spanish Parliament in Madrid demanding for an end to austerity measures and for the resignation of Spain’s central conservative government.

Jill Jacobs explains Jewish values’ influence on modern practices

A fight for social justice revolved around a tomato. Tomato farms in Immokalee, Fla. and throughout the state are grounds for modern day slavery and human trafficking, said Rabbi Jill Jacobs, executive director of Rabbis for Human Rights-North America. Elon administration prepares to investigate Chick-fil-A controversy

At Elon University, the Chick-fil-A controversy is not over yet. A student-authored resolution against Chick-fil-A’s presence in the future Lakeside Dining Hall generated a heated debate on campus, and now, the university’s administration is poised to investigate the issue. Last week, the executive committee of Elon's Board of Trustees announced its decision to form a study committee to examine Elon’s purchasing policy and its partnerships with external vendors.

Elon's playoff chances fade with 31-17 loss to Furman

On both sides of the ball, the running game has killed the Phoenix this season. So much so that Saturday’s 31-17 loss to Furman University has knocked the Phoenix from playoff contention. “(Furman) knew they could run the ball on us and we got exposed,” Elon head coach Jason Swepson said following the game.

Elon University, Go Baby Go modify cars for children with mobility challenges

Elon University’s Innovation Hall was filled with the high-pitched hums of electric motors and the sounds of childhood play April 4. The noises came from the first Go Baby Go program at Elon, where the community takes standard electric toy cars and adapts them for children who cannot traditionally operate one.
