21 things I've learned at 21

My 21st birthday was on July 4th. I sat around and sipped moonshine and talked with people I loved to be around. Which caused me to arrive at an intriguing thought: Now that I’ve lived all this time and cultivated all these relationships, what have I learned from living? So here, each with its own explanation, are 21 things I’ve learned in my life by listening to others, cultivating their wisdom and attempting to implement each lesson. 1.

Going for more: Elon men's soccer looks to improve on stellar 2012 with challenging 2013

Looking to exit the Southern Conference with a third straight conference tournament championship and a second straight regular season title, the Elon University men’s soccer team announced its 2013 schedule Tuesday. Following arguably the most successful season at the Division I level in 2012 with a 15-5-2 record and a 4-1 record against ranked opponents, the Phoenix follow it up with an 18-game regular season schedule that features nine teams that finished in the top 100 RPI in 2012—three of which finished in the top 25. Alive After 5 keeps downtown Elon buzzing during summer

Summers at Elon University are notorious for being uneventful. But if you took an early evening stroll down Lebanon Avenue on June 27, you were in for a pleasant surprise. For the first time, the Town of Elon and the Town Merchants have partnered to sponsor Alive After Five in downtown Elon, a community event that features food, beverages and free entertainment for individuals of all ages on the last Thursday of every summer month. The event kicks off at 3:30 p.m. with the Elon Community Church Farmer's Market, which takes place on the lawn of Elon Community Church every Thursday from April through October. Live music is played from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. as festivalgoers fill the streets while sitting in folding chairs and at picnic tables. Additionally, College Street Tap House and West End Station extend their services outdoors for the event, so festivalgoers can enjoy food and beverages of their choice while listening to the band. Phyllis Creech, director of Elon Recreation & Parks, said the department has wanted to put together an event for the community for several years. "In talking with the merchants [who operate businesses] in downtown Elon, they also expressed interest, so it worked out perfectly to partner together to do something," Creech said.

Elon Dining Adds Two Options

Elon students will soon be able to enjoy biscuits and burritos on campus. Biscuitville and Qdoba Mexican Grill are opening at Elon and will be available as retail options on meal plan this fall. Biscuitville will join Topio's and Freshii in the Winter Garden Cafe.

Unpaid internship experiences under national scrutiny

Unpaid internships are leaving college seniors broke and unemployed after graduation, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). For the third consecutive year, NACE reported survey results showing unpaid internships do not benefit college students, especially in post-graduation employment. In 2013, NACE found 63.1 percent of college seniors who completed a paid internship received at least one job offer, while only 37 percent of former unpaid interns were offered employment. Debby Wall, director of internships at Elon University, argued otherwise. According to Wall, all internships — paid and unpaid — benefit college students by offering course credit and experience. Wall suggested multiple internship experiences are reasons for employment offers, not the intern’s salary.

The Summer Swing: Snakes and Stephen King

In some capacity, I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. I penned my first story in the first grade, a thriller featuring two snakes duking it out over a tasty fly at the top of a “really big rock.” (Spoiler alert: The fly makes a last-second escape.) I’ve filled the time since with sporadic journal entries, essays — some for school, some not — personal memoirs and a couple of dreadful attempts at poetry.

Elon University, Go Baby Go modify cars for children with mobility challenges

Elon University’s Innovation Hall was filled with the high-pitched hums of electric motors and the sounds of childhood play April 4. The noises came from the first Go Baby Go program at Elon, where the community takes standard electric toy cars and adapts them for children who cannot traditionally operate one.
