Will offseason moves pay off for New York Giants?

It was no secret that New York Giants General Manager Jerry Reese had his work cut out for him in reinventing a team that had just struggled to a 7-9 season and had an aging, underachieving roster. On defense, the Giants were an inconsistent, below average unit that ranked eighth worst in yards allowed and gave up nearly 24 points a game.

Women's tennis stumbles at Wake Forest

Since joining the Division I ranks, the Elon University women’s tennis team has only beaten one Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) team — Wake Forest University.  That win came last season, a narrow 4-3 triumph over the Demon Deacons.  But Elon was not as lucky in this year’s matchup, as Wake Forest topped the Phoenix, 6-1, at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center March 16. The Phoenix started doubles play with a win on court No.

James Bryce Professor of European Legal History at Columbia University, Samuel Moyn, spoke Thursday evening in the McBride Gathering Space at the Numen Lumen Pavilion. The room was filled with many students and faculty who came to hear Moyn speak about how human rights have changed since the Holocaust and how these changes have affected the United States' national welfare. Moyn's story conveyed the ideas of ObamaCare following the British ideals of a welfare state and how human rights should result in the decolonization of peoples. "We worry about the state doing too much and not providing freedoms," Moyn said.

Phoenix loses SoCon opener on walk-off

The Elon University softball team dropped its first Southern Conference game of the season 4-3 in a 10-inning marathon to Western Carolina University on a walk-off error Friday night in Cullowhee, N.C. After two and a half scoreless extra innings, the Catamounts walked off with the win in the bottom of the 10th. Sophomore third baseman Taylor Sigmon, who was the designated runner on second that each team begins every extra inning with, advanced to third on a wild pitch from Phoenix junior reliever Caitlin O’Shea. O’Shea then intentionally walked the next two Catamounts hitters to load the bases, but battled back by striking out second baseman Makenzi McAteer. But the next batter, redshirt freshman first baseman Brook Coggins, pounded a grounder to Phoenix junior first baseman Grace Eng, who couldn’t handle it, allowing Sigmon to score and hand the Phoenix its seventh loss of the season. The Catamounts jumped on Elon junior starter Chelsea White right away, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first to take control of the game. After a two-out walk to freshman catcher Kara Salvo and back-to-back singles from Sigmon and freshman designated player Courtney Buchanan, sophomore center fielder Amber Kimrey singled up the middle to score Salvo and Sigmon. The Phoenix battled back with a run in the top of the second and two more in the third. With runners on first and third and two outs, senior second baseman Lauren Oldham ripped a single into right, scoring freshman designated player Emily Roper and cut the Catamounts lead to 2-1. In the top half of the third, Elon senior centerfielder Carleigh Nester hit two-run home run over the wall in center to put the Phoenix up 3-2. But the Catamounts battled back to knot the game at three in the bottom of the fifth. After a walk to sophomore shortstop Karley Harkey, freshman left fielder Courtney Price reached on what she had intended to be a sacrifice bunt but turned into a single when Oldham threw the ball away, allowing Harkey to advance to third. Salvo then lofted a fly ball to right that was deep enough to score Harkey and set up the Catamounts’ theatrics five innings later. With the loss, the Phoenix drops to 15-7-1, and 0-1 in conference play, while the Catamounts improve to 10-14 overall, 1-0 in the Southern Conference. White struggled on this day, going just 2/3 of an inning and giving up two runs on three hits, walking one and striking out a batter. The Phoenix will conclude its three game series with a doubleheader against the Catamounts Saturday, March 15.

Big name players learning harsh reality of NFL

The NFL is a tough business. Just ask Julius Peppers.  Or Darrelle Revis.  Or DeMarcus Ware. Each of these players was released by their respective teams after free agency began March 11, and learned that in the eyes of their teams, they are not worth the amount of money they are scheduled to be paid. https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/443609162942279680 Some of these moves are justified.  For the Chicago Bears, releasing Peppers was a necessary move, as the team is trying to get younger on the defensive end.  Peppers is 34 and not getting any younger.  Though he is a very durable player (hasn’t missed a game in four years with the Bears), his production has declined.  He had just 7.5 sacks in 2013, his lowest mark since the 2007 season. https://twitter.com/djdurkin/status/443536233134698496 Peppers signed a six-year, $91 million deal with the Bears in 2010 after parting ways with the Carolina Panthers, but he is no longer worth this much money.  His salary cap hit would have been $18.1 million in 2014, an amount that a cap-strapped team like the Bears couldn’t afford to pay. Look no further than Dallas to find another perfect example of this scenario.  Cowboys star defensive end DeMarcus Ware would have counted $16 million against the cap in 2014, so the team released him to save $7.4 million in cap space next season.  Ware is one of the most dominant defensive players in Cowboys history, but when it comes to money, NFL teams show no mercy. How about Darrelle Revis?

RVP's role with Manchester United being questioned

When Robin van Persie joined Manchester United in Summer 2012, the Dutch striker said he, “listened to the little boy inside of me — and he screamed Manchester United.” Well, it seems this 30-year-old is still acting like a child.  RVP has seemed unhappy at United this year, something he has in common with the rest of the red half of Manchester.  Everybody expected a transition period with new manager David Moyes taking over, but nobody expected United to be fighting for a place in the Europa League. RVP has battled through a reoccurring thigh injury, and when he has been healthy, his fitness has been less than stellar.
