A pedestrian was fatally struck by an eastbound train in Elon Tuesday afternoon.
The victim, who has been identified as Malcolm Cornelius Sims, 22, was walking east along the railroad tracks near the intersection of Church Street and Trollinger Avenue when he was struck. Sims was not an Elon University student.
In an official statement from Amtrak, the collision happened at approximately 1:49 p.m. The train was a Piedmont train, which serves cities between Charlotte and Raleigh.
No injuries were reported from the 44 passengers on board. The train was delayed for three hours during the investigation, before making its way to Raleigh.
The Elon Police Department continues to investigate. Requests for comment have not been returned.
