Elon Study Abroad plans for Brexit impacts

Senior Noah Ganz stayed up until 1 a.m. to hear the news. United Kingdom, a country he spent four months in studying abroad last fall, was no longer part of the European Union. “The vast majority of eligible voters cannot fathom the consequences of exiting the European Union,” Ganz said.

Elon, Alamance County communities gather to honor victims of Orlando shooting

With candles raised, almost 200 members of the Alamance County community spoke in unison: “Good is stronger than evil. Love is stronger than hate. Light is stronger than darkness. Life is stronger than death.” As they uttered those words, the lights turned on in Life’s Journey United Church of Christ and thus concluded the vigil honoring the memory of the victims of the shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando that claimed the lives of of 49 victims and injured at least 50 others. The candlelight vigil was hosted June 14 by the church, Alamance Pride and the Alamance branch of the NAACP. A similar, yet more intimate gathering of 80 attendees was held June 13 in Elon University’s Gender & LGBTQIA Center.

Elon's "30 Minutes" show wins College Television Awards Emmy

Elon University's "30 Minutes" news program was awarded first place in the "Magazine" category of the 37th College Television Awards, presented on May 25 by the Television Academy Foundation in Los Angeles, California. The half-hour show included exhaustive reporting on the topics of post-cancer breast reconstruction, American-Muslim culture in the 21st century and one man's attempt to revitalize downtown Burlington. During her acceptance speech, Elon University alumna and former ELN Executive Producer Ryan Kathleen Greene '15 was humorous and honest with the audience. "I'm quickly learning why they told us to write a speech because I wrote it on my hand, and I got very nervous and sweated it right off," said Greene, who produced the award-winning entry.

Sophomore charged in breaking and entering

An Elon University sophomore was arrested and charged in connection with a breaking an entering at a Town of Elon residence Tuesdaymorning. McCrae A. Wahl, 19, of Burlington, was charged with felony first degree burglary, felony larcey after breaking and entering and misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Alamance County Jail.

Elon University came together in November after the death of junior football player Demitri Allison, and again in March when Professor of Geography Heidi Frontani died.  Hundreds convened at Gathering of Friends for both Allison and Frontani, sharing memories and stories about their loved ones.

Elon University dance team wins 2 national titles

The Elon dance team huddled on stage with linked arms, waiting to hear their placement in Division I pom at the 2026 National Dance Association’s College National Championships. When the announcer proclaimed Elon champions, the dancers burst into cheers, realizing they’d secured Elon’s first pom category win in program history. The next day, they became two-time national champions with a first place finish in Division I hip hop.

Dismissal of Leandro case concerns public school advocates

The Leandro Comprehensive Remedial Plan, a 2021 proposed public school funding plan to ensure North Carolina meets its educational standards as outlined in the state constitution, called for $5.5 billion over eight years. In Alamance County, the plan would have allocated $56.7 million to the Alamance-Burlington School System — a 38% budget increase as of 2022 — and $15.7 million to early education programs by 2028.
