New police chief for Town of Elon serves home, alma mater

When Cliff Parker assumes the responsibilites of Town of Elon police chief March 5, he is beginning more than a new job; he is returning home. “I love Elon University and the community, and thought it was a great opportunity to come back and serve the community and get the chance to become chief,” he said. Parker applied for the position after LaVell Lovette, the former police chief, announced her retirement.

Numen Lumen Pavilion: expanding or containing diversity?

The construction of the Multi-faith Center symbolizes Elon University’s mission to develop a community diverse in practice and belief, but student reaction to current diversity initiatives does not promise that completion of the Numen Lumen Pavilion will realize the administration’s goal. While Jan Fuller, university chaplain, said she believes the younger population is less confined to its own religious point of view, campus organizations do not reflect this ideal.

Men's basketball faces crucial stretch of home matchups

The Elon University men’s basketball’s loss to Appalachian State University could be symbolized by a number of things that happened Saturday afternoon in Boone. Maybe it was the three Phoenix air-balls in a matter of 30 seconds or so in the first half. Maybe it was the deflation seen on the bench in the last five minutes, where junior forward Brett Ervin’s attempt at a hand-slap with freshman guard Kevin Blake was denied when Blake returned to the bench after being subbed out. Maybe it was sophomore forward Ryley Beaumont’s brief horse-collar of Mountaineer forward Nathan Healy with less than a minute left while Healy attempted a layup, almost knocking him down.

Crucial win for Phoenix, follow-up necessary in Boone

The Elon Phoenix men’s basketball team went into Cullowhee, N.C., Thursday night and took care of their proverbial business, defeating the Western Carolina Catamounts 71-63. The Phoenix (10-9 overall, 5-3 Southern Conference) got 26 points and six rebounds from sophomore guard Jack Isenbarger, who has replaced senior guard Drew Spradlin in the starting lineup and produced, averaging 20 points, five rebounds and three assists in the past three contests for Elon. His best game of the season came against the Catamounts (9-12, 3-5 SoCon), as he shot 7-13 from the field and 7-8 from the free-throw line.

Hustle, craftiness propel Phoenix to win over Mocs

Jack Isenbarger picked a good time to notice something wrong in the Chattanooga defense. With Elon University trailing by a point and just over a minute remaining in the game, the sophomore guard noticed a Mocs defender "sleeping" in the post and threw a pass up to Lucas Troutman. The sophomore forward didn't see the ball until it was halfway on its path near the basket.

Multi-Faith center construction begins

The Academic Village is just the latest site of construction on Elon University's campus. This week, a team broke ground on the Numen Lumen Pavilion, the final building in the village which will serve as a Multi-faith Center. The Numen Lumen Pavilion was formally dedicated at a ceremony in November and will include a multipurpose room, prayer room and meditation garden.

Elon's SUB Game night, light turnout, big impact

Elon’s Student Union Board hosted one of its many events this semester offering a variety of games, snacks, drinks and music Feb. 21. Though the turnout was light with around two attendees, the organization aims to build an inclusive, light-hearted space on weekend nights, channeling a place to meet new people, says Tatiana Lorich.

North Carolina remains in running for first 2028 presidential primary

North Carolina is one of 12 states vying for the first-in-the-nation Democratic primary in 2028, according to the Democratic National Committee. The DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee must select four to five states for the early nominating window of the 2028 presidential election, with at least one state from each of the DNC’s four regions: East, Midwest, South and West.
