Elon Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day shows division on campus

Student activities concerning Chick-fil-A's presence on campus has illuminated division within the Elon University community, most recently with the establishment of Elon University Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day today. Elon students senior Patrick Brown, freshman Jack Whalen and junior Michael Small created and publicized the event on Facebook. The day corresponds with a Student Government Association Senate  vote as to whether to uphold SGA Executive President Darien Flowers' veto of the resolution to terminate Elon University's relationship with Chick-fil-A.

Student improv performance takes Homecoming by storm

While Homecoming Weekend is known for its rambunctious tailgates and the crowning of a king and queen, the Department of Performing Arts has started its own tradition: the Instant Laughter comedy show. In its second year, the show, put on by students in the department, hosted two nights of improvisational comedy for peers, faculty and alumni. Hosted by junior Winston Koone, the show was made up of a variety of sketches, from “Death in a Minute”, in which the actors needed to play a scene in which they die in as close to a minute as possible, to “Shared Story”, in which the players built a story off one another’s dialogue. In order to keep the show appropriate and the players in line, sophomore Anna Weis acted as referee, blowing the whistle on any “foul play” and doling out the appropriate punishment.

Hamilton still a week or so away, Blake more

Elon University sophomore guards Austin Hamilton and Kevin Blake are recovering from injuries as the beginning of practice commences for the men's basketball team. Hamilton, a media and coaches' selection for the Southern Conference All-Freshman Team last season, is still a week to ten days away from returning to full health, while Blake is expected to be out two-and-a-half to three weeks, head coach Matt Matheny said Sunday. Hamilton missed six games late last season due to the injury as well as battling mononucleosis. "We’re very, very hopeful that Austin’s only a week to ten days away," Matheny said.

Flowers vetoes resolution against Chick-fil-A

After nearly two weeks of deliberation, Student Government Association Executive President Darien Flowers announced his decision to veto the resolution against Chick-fil-A’s presence at Elon University. The resolution, which passed 35-11 in a vote by the SGA Senate Oct.

Phoenix withstands second half charge by Western Carolina, earns first SoCon win

Once again, the Elon University football team, this time fresh off a bye week, held a lead early in a Southern Conference game. But for the first time this season, the Phoenix was able to hold onto that lead, clinging to a lead that looked like it was going to slip away in the second half when the Western Carolina University Catamounts scored three straight touchdowns. But the final score read: Elon 42, Western Carolina 31. Elon senior quarterback Thomas Wilson was 20-for-28 for 412 yards and a career-high five touchdown passes to help lead the Phoenix (3-4, 1-3) to its first SoCon victory this season. “It’s huge for the team overall, for our confidence, for our morale,” said Elon sophomore linebacker Jonathan Spain.

Men's soccer suffers setback against College of Charleston

Coming off an impressive 4-3 win over the Georgia Southern University Eagles, the Elon University men’s soccer team lost another high scoring affair to the College of Charleston Cougars 3-2 Tuesday night at Rudd Field. The Cougars scored the first of their three goals in the ninth minute, adding another ten minutes later an Elon own goal.

Effectiveness of credit hour called into questions, Elon supportive of system

In recent years, the backbone of the university course measuring metric, the credit hour, has come under increased scrutiny. Originally created by Andrew Carnegie and once called a “Carnegie unit,” the credit hour was created as a way to ensure professors received proper pension, measuring the amount of time a teacher spent teaching and relating that to payment.

Interim assistant chaplain aims to unite students through interfaith initiatives

When 2008 alumna Lauren Emery returned to Elon this fall, she noticed a change in the university’s strides towards religious diversity. “There is a renewed energy at Elon for creating a space where people can celebrate their own traditions, and also learn how to interact with people who have different traditions from their own," said Emery, who now works as the interim assistant chaplain. Though Emery hopes to help foster an environment that is wholly inclusive and welcoming of students from all religious backgrounds, she said she recognizes this is a goal that will not be met over night. “Some people still don’t feel that this is a place that is as accommodating of their traditions as much as it is of other traditions,” Emery said.

Local healthcare clinic provides lifeline to uninsured Alamance County residents

Alamance County resident Valerie Epperson said she doesn’t think she would be alive right now if it were not for the Open Door Clinic of Alamance County, a clinic that provides free healthcare to people who do not have insurance. “When I first started, my diabetes were out of control, and I was just eating anything I wanted. It’s like, I just didn’t care,” Epperson said. “When you have someone there to help you, it keeps your mind open all the time about, ‘Hey, you need to do this. You need to stop doing this.’”
