Underage Drinking Rights

Underage drinking is a common issue on college campuses and sometimes Elon students are unsure how to react when approached by a police officer, especially if they've been drinking underage. Here are some things to think about when it comes to students knowing their rights. "When an officer actually says 'hey stop' or "let me ask you a few questions,' you're not free to leave," Kristina Marshall, an attorney in Graham, N.C., said. But there are some situations where it's fine to walk away. "If an officer comes up to you when you're just hanging out and says 'Hey how about the Phoenix... how about your classes,' you're still free to go," Marshall said.

New defensive coordinator Brad Sherrod overhauls Elon defense

Quite simply, the Elon University football team’s defense struggled in 2012. Elon surrendered 350 points in 11 games a year ago for an average of 31.8 points per game — second to last in the Southern Conference. The Phoenix ranked sixth of nine teams in the conference, allowing 386.5 yards per game.

Filling the gaps: Elon men's soccer looks to replace holes left by Thomas, Latigue

The holes in the Elon University men’s soccer team are very visible at a time when the Phoenix can least afford them. Coming off arguably the most successful season in program history, one in which then-senior Chris Thomas led the nation in goals scored with 23, the Phoenix enters 2013 as not only a team with a target on its back in the Southern Conference, but a team that can no longer slide under the radar and sneak up on nationally ranked programs. Thomas and Gabe Latigue, one of the anchors of the midfield from a season ago, are no longer donning the Elon uniform, which could be cause for concern with another tough schedule on tap and vital holes needing to be plugged. “Everybody now is more aware of our team and our program,” said Elon head coach Darren Powell.

On 'Yeezus': Yeezy season is upon us

The darkly distorted passion project of producer-rapper/designer Kanye West dropped the same day as North Carolina MC J Cole’s standout sophomore LP Born Sinner and ever-evolving pop-frat weed rapper Mac Miller’s second major label release, Watching Movies with the Sound Off. Cole and Miller delighted both fans and critics alike with cinematic production, an auteur-level attention to design detail and, most importantly to many young fans, official web streams of both of the albums in their entirety a full week before their releases. Yeezus didn’t produce a single, wasn’t available for pre-order and doesn’t even have album art.

Chris Neal brings in class of 12 for 2013 women's soccer season

Isaac Newton’s Third Law of Motion states, “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.” Little did Newton know, his law would be used for more than just science. The Elon University women’s soccer team brought the law into the world of sports with its 2013 recruiting class — one that features 12 new additions to the team as well as two transfers, both of which came from Clemson University. With numerous knee injuries, including multiple torn ACLs in 2012, the Phoenix had a lot of question marks entering the season — ones that could only be remedied by bringing in more recruits as insurance. “Initially, the recruiting class started off as a smaller class,” said Elon head coach Chris Neal.

Students should start investing early, advisors say

While college students may not be known for having disposable incomes, those that do have options have the ability to go beyond simply having a savings account. David Gray, a financial advisor with Capital Management in Greensboro, said he sees investing early as a key component to getting on the right track, financially. "No matter how small the amount, it's the habit you want to develop," Gray said.

Changes Coming To West End

West End Station will have a new owner starting Monday. The local bar on Lebanon Ave. has been sold to Harold Hill III, a former chef at The Root. Current owner, Josh Ezrine, did not want to comment on the closure but did say "drinks will be dirt cheap on Sunday." The bar will remain open during the transition period, Hill said, but he didn't comment on whether or not the bar will undergo renovations. West End Station has a market value of $379,784, according to the Alamance County Register of Deeds office. This summer, ELN first reported the closures of Sandys and College Street Taphouse. Elon University senior’s research explores whether expectations can amplify exercise’s benefits

For Asia Green, a senior exercise science major at Elon, being curious about undergraduate research evolved into something more: a nationally recognized research project exploring the coaction between mindset, movement, and outcomes. Green traced her initial spark of inspiration and interest in the field of undergraduate research back to her sophomore year, when she first attended the Student Undergraduate Research Forum. The forum exposed Green to student-led research that produced meaningful, real-world impact. From there, she said, she sought out mentorship to get started.
