Elon Poll shows Tillis in lead ahead of primaries

With primaries for the Senate and House this week, the April 2014 Elon University Poll shows North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis maintaining his lead for the Republican Senate nomination with more than 60 percent of respondents now recognizing his name. In February, the Elon Poll showed that only 38 percent of voters recognized Tillis’ name.

Losses put Elon in tough spot for SoCon seeding

A skid that has now become seven losses in nine games has driven the term “crunch time” to a whole new level for the Elon University baseball team. The ladder of those losses, a 7-5 shortcoming to Davidson College May 4, illustrated how tough the stretch has been for Elon. “It’s frustrating,” junior left fielder Casey Jones said.

'Active City Streets' strolls through downtown Burlington

Burlington community members and Elon students came together this weekend to promote active living. "Active City Streets" is an event to promote a life of exercise and nutritional eating. Some of the featured events were Zumba, karate demonstrations, unicycling, hula hooping, yoga classes and even a performance from Elon's Finest. But that wasn't all that was there. They also had healthy-food trucks and a farmers market with produce, flowers and foods locally grown and produced. There were 12 Elon organizations present for the event and dozens more volunteers with the Kernodle Center. The successful event fostered a lot of community development. Elon senior Mat Goldberg, who worked at the event, said why it's important for Elon students to come to Burlington events like this one. "I think we talk a lot about how Elon is the place where we belong, recognizing that Elon is our home.

Spartans down Phoenix in doubleheader

The Elon University softball team was swept by local rival University of North Carolina at Greensboro 10-2 and 10-8 in the first two games of a three-game set May 3 at UNCG Softball Park in Greensboro in what is the Phoenix’s last series before postseason play begins next week. In the first game, the Spartans used a dominant performance in the circle by senior starter Raeanne Hanks and hot bats from all nine starters to trounce the Phoenix 10-2. The Spartans began their offensive onslaught in the bottom of the first with four runs.

Elon baseball splits first two games against Davidson

After getting swept by the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and having its midweek game against Coastal Carolina University canceled because of weather, the Elon University baseball team took a step forward Friday night before regressing once again Saturday. Going up against the Southern Conference’s best in Davidson College, the Phoenix won the series opener 8-5 before falling 9-2 on Saturday. “You are what you repeatedly do,” Elon head coach Mike Kennedy said.

Elon falls to Detroit in A-Sun Semifinals

The second-seeded Elon University women’s lacrosse team finished out its season May 2 with a 15-11 loss to third-seeded University of Detroit Mercy in the semifinals of the Atlantic Sun Tournament. The Phoenix put up a fight, taking the advantage in shots 29-23, putting 27 on net, but Titans goalie Lexie McCormick came up with 16 saves to keep the Phoenix attack out of the back of the net.

Lost dog embraced by Elon students passes away

Khaleesi, a black Labrador mix who crossed paths with students across campus, passed away Friday, April 25. Khaleesi had been loose for more than a month since escaping from its owners, two Elon University juniors. After escaping, Khaleesi was seen everywhere on campus from the Oaks and Greek courts to Danieley Center. Khaleesi especially impacted Danieley Center residents, leading people to dub her the “Danieley Dog.” The owners made multiple attempts to look for the dog.

Democracy Matters may be newest Elon political organization

A new student political organization is aiming to join the likes of Young Americans for Liberty (YAL) and the Elon College Democrats next fall. Democracy Matters, a national nonprofit and nonpartisan organization that seeks to “get big money out of politics and people back in” is in talks with Elon University to establish a chapter. The organization’s National Field Director, Anita Kinney, said it’s important  not only to educate young people about politics, but to mobilize them and harness their energy also. “We strive to tell college students that there is always something you can do,” Kinney said.

Teaching and Learning Minor added

Elon University will add a Teaching and Learning minor to its course catalog next fall for students interested in public education but not necessarily in teaching as a profession. The 20 credit hours required aim to train students to teach outside the classroom — ideas ranging from teaching adults how to build mobile applications to accommodating special needs in an office setting. The minor is designed to teach non-education majors how to translate educational principles to society.

Mckinnon Hall was decorated in gold, green and red on Feb. 25 as students came together for Elon’s Carnaval celebration, a festival celebrated across Latin America before Lent begins. The event featured food, crafts and performances from Elon’s drum line and traditional Afro-Brazilian dance.

Elon to adopt new learning management system following fall review of Moodle platform

Students logging into their courses next academic year may notice a shift in how assignments, grades and course materials are organized as Elon transitions from Moodle, its old learning management system, to Canvas by Instructure, its new one. The decision followed a campuswide evaluation of Moodle that included surveys and open forums, according to Teaching and Learning Technologies Senior Director Kelly Reimer.
