Animal Captivity class takes first steps toward building better human, non-human relationships

One of Elon University’s top goals is turning students into global citizens. But in a world where humans represent a small percentage of total life on this planet, where do non-humans fall into this plan? Students in Martin Fowler’s upper-level philosophy class “Animal Captivity: Zoos, Sanctuaries and Asylums” have been delving into this question since the class was first taught in Spring 2012 — and they may have recently found an answer. It all started when senior Thomas Berry, a philosophy major who took Animal Captivity in Spring 2012, came up with the initial concept of developing a place on Elon’s campus where humans and animals can coexist symbiotically. “Thomas had thought about this as a Leadership Fellow for a legacy project,” said Fowler, lecturer in philosophy.

Lavender Graduation honors Elon’s growing LGBTQ community

Elon University’s LGBTQ community said goodbye to its seniors May 19 during Lavender Graduation, a special graduation ceremony that honors LGBTQ students and allies for their achievements during their college career. While Spectrum, Elon’s queer-straight alliance, organized the event, the ceremony was open to all LGBTQ students.

Elon senior takes on China’s capital to teach English

Beijing. It’s a city of more than 20 million people, and soon, an Elon University senior will join them to teach English to Chinese adults in the business world. Billy Fidler, an exercise science major from Goldsboro, N.C., accepted a yearlong teaching position with English First, a division of Education First with more than 400 language centers and schools worldwide. “I knew I wanted to travel after college,” Fidler said.

Elon Joins Colonial Athletic Association

Elon University announced Thursday that it will leave the Southern Conference and join the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) beginning in the 2014-2015 school year. There are currently 1,850 students who are from the CAA footprint.

Elon athletics jumping to Colonial Athletic Conference

Following the announcement early Wednesday afternoon of a news conference May 23, sources have confirmed Elon University Athletics will exit the Southern Conference for the Colonial Athletic Association. While the news conference will be held Thursday, Adam Smith of The Burlington Times-News confirmed with administration the Phoenix will make the move after learning President Leo Lambert had officially informed Southern Conference commissioner John Iamarino of the switch. The announcement comes 10 years after Elon originally joined the Southern Conference in 2003.

Furman torches Elon in tournament opener

Elon University senior starting pitcher Kyle Webb was a perfect 6-0 in Southern Conference play this season, making him a clear choice to start Wednesday’s SoCon tournament opener against host Furman University in Greenville, S.C. The Phoenix fell behind on runs in each of the first three innings and couldn’t recover, dropping the opener of the tournament 10-1. After a delay with one out in the top of the first inning due to lightning in the area, the game resumed after Will Muzika singled and scored on a triple to center from Greg Harrison. Chris Ohmstede put Furman up 2-0 with a one-out home run to left field in the top of the second.
