Each sculpture at Beechwood Metalworks has a story and is carefully crafted to leave an impression on people.
"I want it to be something people feel," owner Casey Lewis said. "In my opinion that is what sculpture is about."
From wooden monkeys to purple flowers, there is an array of projects that come out of Beechwood Metalworks. But there is one piece right now that is getting the owner's special attention.
"It is very humbling to think about our small town managed to get a piece of this," Lewis said.
Lewis has 25 pounds and 4x4 inches of World Trade Center steel. Lewis got it from a wrecking company in Greensboro and now it's his job to make it into a sculpture. A piece of history, for those in Alamance County to see and remember the events and impact of 9/11.
"I want everyone to focus on the sacrifices these public servants made," Lewis said. "The fact that they were willing to run back into this building. The fact that this was a team effort. That's truly the beauty of it to me is how beautiful and loving these people were and I hope I am able to address that in my piece so other people can appreciate it."
It's a small piece of steel with big meaning, something Lewis doesn't want to forget.
"This was important enough to them to not sell for scrap and to let the world have a piece to share," he said.
There's still no set plan on how and where the steel will be displayed in Alamance County, but the meaning behind this piece of history will never change.
