Two Elon students say they woke up to hate language on Sunday.

The two roommates, one Jewish and one African-American, claim someone wrote "KKK" and drew a swastika on their dorm room whiteboard.

They both live on the third floor of Colonnades D.

According to Vice President of Student Life Dr. Smith Jackson, the university is investigating and believe the two were targeted.

"It's hurtful, it's unnecessary, it's just atrocious," said Dr. Jackson. "So hopefully you can take a bad situation and try to educate people around that."

The members of the hall gathered to discuss the incident on Monday evening and Inclusive Community Council's Education team is getting together on Tuesday to review what happened.

While he hopes dialogue comes from this, Dr. Jackson told us that he doesn't think he needs to email everyone about it like he has for racial slur incidents in the past.

"I hope that everyone at the university does know that we do abhor this kind of situation, this kind of behavior," said Dr. Jackson. "We don't think that anyone on campus is going around and is a threat on campus."

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article misidentified the living location as the Interfaith Learning Community. The roommates live in the same building as the Interfaith Learning Community but the incident occurred on the third floor of Colonnades D. Elon Local News regrets the error.
