Elon senior Elizabeth Purvis prepares to push poetry beyond graduation

Elizabeth Purvis, known to her friends as Liz, could read when she was three years old, something most children don’t master until they’re five or six. “I know that because my sister was born when I was two and a half, and I was reading in the waiting room of the hospital,” she said. Now, as a senior English major at Elon University, literature and creative writing are what she does best.

Behind the nameplate with Student Government President Joe Incorvia

Samuel Warren, Darien Flowers, Welsford Bishopric. These three men have represented Elon, and now the newest SGA President takes his seat at the head of the Executive Staff. Junior Joe Incorvia moves into the President's room in the Student Government Office on April 3, but there is more to Incorvia than just the title. "I come from a small town in Connecticut," Incorvia says.

Michael Sam is exactly what the NFL needs

Michael Sam is the kind of role model I wish I’d had growing up.  The South Eastern Conference (SEC) defensive player of the year from the University of Missouri recently came out as gay ahead of the 2014 NFL draft, a bold move that will likely make him the first openly gay player in NFL history.  While some have claimed it to be a publicity stunt, it’s important to remember that he did this in the face of considerable risk to his draft position, endorsement deals and relationships with future teammates, all because he didn’t want to spend his career hiding who he really was. The courage he demonstrated is admirable.  Growing up as a gay guy, I quickly noticed the lack of masculine role models in the gay community.  While I can’t say I have personally experienced much in the way of overt discrimination, I can say that certain activities by nature never seemed to be welcoming to people like me with sports being among them.  The hyper-masculine environment was the opposite of what society told me gay men were supposed to be, and so as a kid I stuck with extracurricular activities that were more in line with my concept of a “gay lifestyle.” Of course, I now realize this is all nonsense, but it’s not hard to see how common these views have become in our society.  One needs to look no further than a Sports Illustrated article that was published just last week.

Elon loses frustrating game to UNC Charlotte

As the rest of the team walked back toward the home dugout to collect their gear after a discouraging 4-3 loss to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Elon University softball head coach Kathy Bocock shouted at her pitchers to come have a separate meeting with her. When the entire staff had crowded around her, Bocock began imploring each of them to continue to work hard at their craft.

Curling's popularity grows in North Carolina

The Winter Olympics may have wrapped up in Sochi recently, but one of its sports is still going strong in the local area. Curling became a Winter Olympic sport in 1998 and continues to grow in popularity around the United States. The winter sport involves two teams of four sliding a stone across the ice into four concentric rings.

Police charge man in indecent exposure case

Elon University Police arrested a 31-year-old male Tuesday with indecent exposure following an incident that occurred at the intersection of O'Kelly and Haggard Avenue. According to an Elon University Police report, Colin Michael Mahoney was arrested at his residence in Chapel Hill on Feb.

After three months of civil and violent unrest, a new day has risen for Ukraine. President Yanukovych has been ousted by Parliament leaving its people wondering what's next. Since November, thousands have taken to the streets protesting the fate of the country.

McEwen Dining Hall supervisor thrives in new location

There's a new face in McEwen Dining Hall. Chef Linda Loucurrie transferred from working in Lakeside, Biscuitville and Winter Garden Cafe to overseeing McEwen Dining Hall as a supervisor and cook. According to Dining Services Marketing Manager Kate Nelson, Dining Services relocates employees to give them new exposure in their job roles and to keep them interested. In Loucurrie's new domain, that plan is working.

Reload, not rebuild: so far, so good for Elon baseball

When Elon University head baseball coach Mike Kennedy was asked about the 17 new players on his 2014 team, he refused to say that they were part of a rebuilding year. Instead, Kennedy said that his team went out to “reload” for a run at a fifth Southern Conference regular season or third Southern Conference tournament championship.

Phoenix continuing to find consistency

Twelve games into its season, the Elon University softball team has shown signs of great potential. At the same time, there have been flashes of inconsistency. The Phoenix went its first four games without losing, going 3-0-1 at the Charleston Southern Tournament while averaging more than eight runs per game.

Election Center: Candidate profiles for the March 3 primary

Primary elections will be held March 3 in North Carolina. The Democratic and Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate will be on the ballot. The winners of these races will face off in November during the general election for the open North Carolina Senate seat. Another race on the Republican ballot is Alamance County Sheriff, with incumbent Terry Johnson being challenged by two candidates. Other races for Board of County Commissioners, County Clerk of Superior Court and North Carolina Appeals Seat 1 are also on the ballot.

Candidates for dean of Student Health and Well-Being present in front of Elon community

Candidates for the next dean of Student Health and Well-Being at Elon University presented in front of the Elon community in recent weeks as part of the selection process. The position is currently held by Jana Lynn Patterson, who is retiring in fall 2026 after 40 years at Elon University. The dean will lead the HealthEU Initiative and the Boldly Elon strategic plan, while supervising departments like Counseling Services and Student Health Services. They will also manage the new 135,000 square foot HealthEU building, set to open in fall 2026.
