The humans behind ‘Humans of Elon’

Correction 4/5: Due to an editing error, an earlier headline of this story referred to "Humans at Elon." The photography project is "Humans of Elon." The Pendulum regrets the error.  A person, a picture and a quote.  These are the elements of “Humans of Elon,” a photo collection of people on Elon University’s campus started and run by freshmen Ben Driscoll and Mercedes Kent.  The founders decided to collaborate on the project before fall classes started.

In honor of the art history department’s 10-year anniversary, discussions on transhistories of the visual echoed through the halls of Elon University’s Koury Business Center during a two-day symposium. Between, Among, and Across: Transhistories of the Visual was the theme of the two-day on-campus conference Friday and Saturday.

DIY winter healing

FOR DRY LIPS What you’ll need: One part white or brown sugar (grab packets from anywhere there’s coffee!) One part petroleum jelly (aka Vaseline) What to do: Mix ingredients in the palm of your hand and use a finger to gently rub the mixture into your lips for about 30 seconds. Rinse and repeat as necessary. Finish with a later of petroleum jelly.

Elon pro-Israel organization brings former IDF soldiers to campus

A recently formed Elon University cultural organization called Israel Dialogue, Education and Advocacy (IDEA) brought two Israeli reservist soldiers to campus Friday through the national non-profit organization Stand With Us. IDEA, created by senior Maia Szulik, officially became an Elon cultural organization in November 2014. Szulik said the organization strives to foster dialogue, education and advocacy about Israel and the Middle East. “We want to offer a space on campus for healthy conversation on issues that may be controversial, and we also want to have events that highlight Israeli culture and life while clarifying many miscon- ceptions that people have on a very complex situation,” she said.

Coach Matheny's daughter cheers Men's Basketball team to victory

Five-year old Ava Matheny, daughter of Elon head men's basketball coach Matt Matheny has been suiting up in maroon and gold, and melting the hearts of Phoenix fans throughout Alumni Gym. "Its cool after games just to see people say I watched your daughter and she's the cutest thing in the world," Coach Matheny said. Ava got her start in cheerleading in November after spending the last few years watching from the stands. "After a few years of sitting in the stands, she decided she wanted to try [cheerleading]," Ava's mom Jennifer Matheny said.

Public school closings cause problems for students

While most of the snow has melted away, some members of the Alamance and Guilford County communities continue to deal with the aftermath of the winter storm. Students in the Alamance Burlington School System returned to school today after nearly two weeks off due to the weather.
