Blue collared professor’s tribal teaching

Shawn Humphrey, associate professor of economics at the University of Maryland, is a man of hard work, mobilizing grassroots movements on a budget and “do-gooding” in business. Thursday, Sept. 24, he will share his personal pedagogy of “Tribal Teaching” — an entrepreneurial approach involving student autonomy, authority and responsibility — “Do-Goodernomics” and microfinance, or the financial services to low-income individuals, with Elon University students.

Sports LLC should be less restrictive

If it had been available when I was a freshman, I absolutely would have applied. But the Sports, Participation & Networking (SPN) Living Learning Community (LLC), which is focused on sports and ties in with the Sport and Event Management (SEM) department, is new to Elon University this year. According to its page on Elon’s website, those in the SPN will “participate in intramural sports on campus as well as attend local sporting events” and “plan social events that interest them and engage with faculty members ... outside of the classroom.” The description also mentions meet-and-greets with Elon coaches, group dinners and trips to events such as the ACC Tournament and minor league baseball games. Sounds great.

Campus reacts to Presidential Task Force findings

For years there has been a lot of conversation, both privately and publicly, about the divide of race and experiences on Elon's campus. Now, because of the results from the Presidential Task Force on Black Student, Faculty and Staff Experiences, the campus has solid data to back the claims that for a significant portion of Elon's Black students, faculty and staff, feels that Elon can be a drastically different place than their non-Black peers and colleagues. Results gave insight and recommendations to issues like safety, inclusivity and overall community interactions.

President Obama announces changes to FAFSA application

Though his days in office are numbered, President Obama rolled out a new piece of legislation this week during a speech in Des Moines, Iowa. In order to make it easier for prospective college students apply for financial aid, President Obama announced a series of minor amendments to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) program. Phoenix withstands late flurry to beat Charlotte

Through 84 minutes, all signs pointed to an easy victory for the Elon Women's soccer team, who were beating the University of North Carolina  at Charlotte 3-0. Six minutes and a few goals later, Elon left victorious, defeating the 49ers 4-2 Friday night at Rudd Field. The Phoenix had successfully stifled the Charlotte attack for most of the match, scoring a goal in the first half and tacking on two more before the onslaught of goals to end the match.

Column: Defeat leaves Skrosky searching for big plays on offense

While the Elon University football team lost the lead late in the fourth quarter, they’ll be looking back at the first half for an abundance of missed scoring chances against North Carolina A&T State University. Elon started its first five drives from its own 47 yard line, NC A&T’s 45 and its own 46, 45 and 40 yard lines. While the Phoenix reached Aggie territory in four of those five drives, it came away with no points. “We had a couple missed opportunities in the first half,” said head coach Rich Skrosky. You could say that again.

Former Elon University student arrested for sexual exploitation charge

A Burlington man, who previously attended Elon University, was arrested April 21 and charged with four counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor. Nikolaos Alexander Fotiou, 18, was taken to the Alamance County Detention Center and is being held there under no bond, as of April 24. According to a Burlington Police Department press release, the Invictus Task Force aided with the investigation.

Meet Elon University’s 2026 Lumen Prize winners

Fifteen students have been selected to receive $20,000 to support their mentored research and projects for the next two years as a part of the Lumen Prize. The 2026 Lumen Scholar winners will work closely with their mentors on their projects during their junior and senior years.
