Freshmen voters split on first-time elections

A few years ago in Las Vegas, the election results for city council members ended in a tie — causing the winner to be decided by drawing cards. Kenneth Fernandez, assistant professor of political science at Elon University and director of the Elon University Poll, remembers this rare occurrence from his prior teaching stint at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.

Men's soccer drops second straight at Hofstra 1-0

The No. 10 Elon University men’s soccer team lost 1-0 on the road Oct. 24 to No. 24 Hofstra University in a battle of ranked Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) teams.  The win for Hofstra makes it the regular season CAA champion, meaning the Pride will host the CAA semi-finals and finals later this season. With a win over or a draw against the College of Charleston in its season finale, Elon can earn a bye past the quarterfinals by finishing in the top two in the conference.

Women's soccer loses to James Madison in overtime

The Elon University women’s soccer team was seconds away from the second overtime period against James Madison University, but the Dukes scored with six seconds remaining in the first overtime period to defeat the Phoenix 1-0 Friday night in Harrisonburg, V.A.  Sophomore midfielder Allison Bordell’s header found the back of the next moments before the conclusion of the first overtime period, giving the Dukes a win it sorely needed heading into the Colonial Athletic Association tournament next weekend.

After what seemed to be the longest week ever, the day my roommates and I had been waiting for all week finally came. The Taylor Swift 1989 World Tour was stopping in Greensboro, and we had three seats in section 126 with our names on it.

Football grinding to get ground game going

Heading into last Saturday’s matchup against Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opponent James Madison University, the Elon University football team had picked up just 454 yards on the ground on 183 rushing attempts, good for a measly 2.5 yards per carry. With a rushing offense ranked 119 of 123 Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams, head coach Rich Skrosky said to this week that getting the ground game going was a top priority for the team going forward. Even after the Dukes ran over Elon to the tune of a 51-0 shellacking, Skrosky was still able to find some positives to pull from Elon’s ground attack.

REAch Wounded Warrior Veterans Program

Since the Iraq War, which began in 2003, the Wounded Warrior Project said, there have been over 48,000 service men and women physically injured in combat. "They need to be recognized from all that they have been through and that's where we come in," Director of REAch's Wounded Warrior Veterans Program and President of the non-profit organization, Resource Exchange Association, Bud Shepherd said. But Shepherd isn't talking about helping just anybody. "Right now we're only working with the Purple Hearters," Shepherd said. REA allows people in the Alamance County community living below the poverty line to buy food and household supplies at reduced prices.

Sparkle Cat Rescue saves abandoned cats

Sparkle Cat Rescue was founded in November in 2014 with the goal to help the "forgotten felines" through fostering and adoption. Stephanie Grantham, president and co-founder of the organization, said that since starting the non-profit organization less than a year ago, they have saved approximately 130 cats. "There were a lot of people in our community actually that pushed us to do a rescue," said Grantham.
