Elon falls to UNCG in last contest before CAA play

The Elon university volleyball team fell to the University of North Carolina- Greensboro on Wednesday, 3-1 (17-25, 25-21, 21-25, 21-25). The contest marks the last game for the Phoenix before beginning conference play in the Colonial Athletic Association.

At Elon University, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life — formerly the Office of Greek Life — is making an effort to improve the relationship between Greek organizations and the rest of campus and the general perception of Greek organizations on campus. But these efforts can’t be one-sided.

Elon Task Force report on black experience highlights concerns, offers recommendations

A report released earlier today by the Elon University Presidential Task Force on Black Student, Faculty, and Staff Experience highlights the disconcerting emphasis black and non-black survey respondents placed on lack of diversity, inclusiveness and support for black students, faculty and staff at Elon. The report, a product of responses from a December 2014 campus climate survey, reveals, among other findings, that “less than a quarter of Black survey respondents said they felt safe on campus.”

Mitchell earns national honor

Junior linebacker Corey Mitchell was named the STATS FCS National Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the Elon University football team’s 21-13 victory over Gardner-Webb University. Mitchell, who was also named Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Defensive Player of the Week, had a career-high 18 tackles that night, eight of which were solo tackles.

Task Force Releases Report on "Black Student, Faculty, and Staff Experiences"

Survey results and recommendations have been released today by the "Presidential Task Force on Black Student, Faculty and Staff Experiences." The Fall 2014 campus climate survey was administered by the task force, and included surveys, focus groups and one-on-one interviews with task force members. Report Findings of Non-Black Students, Faculty and Staff According to the report, non-black student respondents indicated in the campus survey that they viewed Elon's campus climate as positive and inclusive. When asked a question on the campus survey of, "What is the most important issue facing Elon University?," the most common answer given by non-black students was associated with the lack of diversity on campus. Most non-black student survey respondents said they were committed to promoting inclusion at Elon, and see themselves as active supporters of diversity. The report states that although non-black students, faculty and staff are aware of some of the issues that black students, faculty and staff face at Elon, they generally have a "much rosier image of the university's level of inclusivity." Non-black faculty and staff perceived the work environment to be much more inclusive than black faculty and staff did.

North Carolinians rate public schools poorly in new Elon Poll

As K-12 students across North Carolina prepare for their winter break, the Elon University Poll released poll data on Dec. 17 finding that most North Carolinians gave mediocre or poor grades to public schools across the state. “The states have always had deep authority on education, but there has been more federal involvement in various years,” Director of the Elon University Poll Jason Husser said. “So we thought, well, this is the time for us to really look in depth about what do people think about North Carolina schools.”

Grief, loss support group provides comfort for Elon faculty, staff

Elon University associate chaplain Rev. Julie Tonnesen said loss and grief are universal emotions, but found that they can be difficult for faculty and staff to process while continuing their usual routines. “Even when we show up to work, that doesn’t mean that we get to put the rest of our lives on the back burner,” Tonnesen said. “Our grief comes with us. It’s not something we can just keep on a shelf at home.” In collaboration with Counseling Services, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, began offering a monthly group for faculty and staff to support those affected by loss.
