Elon University senior Megan Noor is in search of a new caretaker for the bees she’s helped manage the last three years. Noor, who spent the spring taking care of bees, has been interested in bees ever since she joined the organization her freshman year.

Senior Kamal Lado has always envisioned creating a space for Black students to showcase their artwork, but they never thought such an event would be realized within their four years at Elon University. However, the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement following the killing of George Floyd this summer spurred Kamal to ensure their vision came to life.

Ryan McElhinney ‘19 and Lindsay Reeth ‘19 were juniors at Elon University and knew of students with Etsy shops and a passion for art outside of classes. They became interested in the entrepreneurship side of art and wanted to give students the chance to “express their creative passion,” according to McElhinney.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, colleges and universities are struggling to find ways for students to get involved on campus while being socially distant. A group of students came up with an idea that would solve those problems: a virtual scavenger hunt. The idea for the interactive scavenger hunt came from a University of Chicago tradition, but according to the supervisor of the Elon Traditions council, professor Jodean Schmiederer, the Elon Traditions Council of Judges customized this to be interactive with the Elon student community.

Hands on her hips, Elon junior Ellie Mitchell alternated between light kicking and agile jumps while on stage alongside her peers, the rest of the Elon Irish Step Dancing Team. While the spotlights’ beam descended onto their costumes at the 2020 Spring Relay for Life, the team soaked up the audience’s praise. After the celebratory dance concluded, Mitchell took a moment to observe how the team’s hard work paid off in the crowd’s reaction.

A key component of every introduction to sociology class is the “looking glass self,” a concept created by American sociologist Charles Horton Cooley. The looking glass self describes how people develop their characters from interactions with others. But due to COVID-19 physical distancing regulations, interactions with others have changed, leaving some to wonder what the long-term impact on mental health and interpersonal relations will be.

For freshmen like Sarah Dodman, who do not necessarily know what the process looks like, sorority recruitment can be a nerve-wracking experience. Now that Elon University’s Panhellenic Association has announced that 2021 sorority recruitment will be officially moved to a virtual format because of the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic, many freshmen like Dodman are wondering what joining a fraternity or sorority will look like this year.

Over 800 Meals on Wheels volunteers are traveling around Alamance County to deliver meals to seniors, families, and other individuals who are currently homebound due to the coronavirus pandemic. Social distancing and isolation has created an increased need for residents to receive meals and aid.

Freshman Maddie Shosten was on a photo shoot with a high school senior in Georgia, searching for a bamboo forest she had seen on TikTok. While exploring, she realized she had walked six miles too many. Although she got lost finding the bamboo forest, she loved the spontaneous feeling from the adventure.

Senior Cameron McCrary has been involved in New Student Orientation for the past three years. She started as orientation leader and is now a student coordinator. McCrary has the responsibility of building training for the orientation team and facilitating breakout sessions. Through this position, she has also helped to make orientation better fit Elon’s coronavirus policies.
