Strummin' on a sunny afternoon

It's not often that you see random whims of musical or artistic action around Elon's campus, so on the rare occasion that a gent is spotted outside of the Acorn Coffee Shop strumming his guitar and singing sweet melodies, it stands out. After Josh Kendrick got off his shift at work, he came on over to "downtown" Elon to play some tunes on this beautiful afternoon.

Awards chosen by The Pendulum Sports Desk MVP | Jack Isenbarger | #20 | Sophomore guard Even with a bum shoulder for most of the season, sophomore guard Jack Isenbarger managed to impress everyone around him. He was named to the Southern Conference All-Conference team by the coaches, second team All-Conference by the media and the All-Conference tournament second team. “I thought he earned All-Southern Conference honors,” Elon head coach Matt Matheny said.

Softball sweep of Furman continues sharp play

The ball jumped off the bat of Furman University’s Emily Boyer, carrying to deep left field. But Elon University senior leftfielder Tomeka Watson calmly reached over the wall, grabbed the ball in flight and foiled the Paladins sixth inning rally attempt on Sunday. It was a play symbolic of the weekend as a whole.

SoCon honors Phoenix’s O’Shea as Player of the Week  Senior pitcher Erin O’Shea was named the Southern Conference’s softball Player of the Week for games played March 5-11. She helped the Phoenix to a series sweep of Furman University over the weekend, hitting .714 with five hits, four runs, four RBI and three stolen bases.

Chilean school system met with controversy

When conversing with each other for the first time, many American college students ask "Did you attend private or public school?" It is an inquiry as customary as “where are you living on campus?”  Thus, many students respond with just a few words, and their conversations proceed to different subjects.  But if you ask a Chilean university student about the administration of their primary and secondary education, the response will not be brief, and you might even find yourself listening to a manifesto. The reason for this complication is that “all the primary and high schools in Chile are private,” said Chilean native, Francisco. That is not to say there are no public schools.  Public schools exist in name, but a Chilean public school does not receive funding through citizens’ taxes and receives very little in the form of federal funds.  Therefore, students from kindergarten to 12th grade must pay tuition every year in order to attend school, no matter what school they attend. The only types of governmental assistance offered to the guardians of students are subsidies that do little to lower the cost of primary and secondary education significantly. “The basic cost of a Chilean (primary and secondary) education is 1.8 million pesos (approximately $3,715 USD) per year.

Survey reveals North Carolinians optimistic about Obama, national economy

The results from the most recent Elon Poll reveal that North Carolinians have an increasingly favorable opinion of President Barack Obama and are more optimistic about the national economy. Of the 605 adults that took the survey, 28.5 percent said they approved of the way Obama is handling his job as president, while only 22.9 percent felt the same in November.

With midterms coming up and Spring Break just around the corner, the staff is bound to need some comic relief from their busy schedules - much of which is so wholeheartedly dedicated to the Pendulum. Mebane City Council to expand offices, parking for staff

The Mebane City Council purchased a dentist's office and parking lot for $325,000 in a unanimous vote. The property is located across from the City Hall. North Carolina requires local governments to keep a minimum reserve — called a fund balance — equal to 8% of their annual general expenses.

School of Education classrooms, offices move as Mooney renovations progress

Renovations to Elon University’s Mooney Building are in progress after it closed at the beginning of Winter Term. The building’s closure was announced Jan. 8 and renovations officially began Jan. 14. All upgrades are expected to be finished by the end of summer in time for the fall semester.
